Special Olympics announce Krista McCarville as Honorary Games Chair

Special Olympics announce Krista McCarville as Honorary Games Chair

Special Olympics Launches Volunteer Drive

THUNDER BAY, Ontario  – October 4, 2019  (LSN) – Two exciting announcements kick-started the Volunteer Drive for the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Thunder Bay 2020 on Thursday. Tbaytel was recognized as the Volunteer Sponsor and local athlete Krista McCarville was announced as the Honorary Chair for the Games. Both will offer significant support to the Games Organizing Committee in recruiting the over 800 volunteers that will be needed this February.

“We are grateful to have both Tbaytel and Krista as part of the team making the Games a reality for our Special Olympics athletes,” said Doug Henry, Games Manager. “Tbaytel’s recognition of the value of volunteerism will support our recruitment efforts and enable us to prepare and later appreciate our volunteers, while Krista will help shine a spotlight on the impact a volunteer can have on our athletes and event. Krista will also serve as an important role model for our athletes. We hope our community will be inspired by the leadership of Krista and Tbaytel.”
Dan Topatigh, President and CEO of Tbaytel, shared the reasons behind Tbaytel’s support of the Games. “Tbaytel is committed to supporting the people, organizations and events who are helping build a stronger and more vibrant Northern Ontario,” he said. “On behalf of our entire organization—from our Municipal Services Board, management and senior leadership teams, to the more than 400 employees who make up our regional workforce—we are thrilled to be the Volunteer Sponsor of the Special Olympics and look forward to volunteering ourselves in February. We encourage other members of the community to sign up now and contribute to the success of these games.”
Volunteer opportunities range from sport-specific roles and athlete support to drivers, hospitality, security, registration support and more. Planning committees, fundraising activities and opening and closing ceremonies for the Games will also require support. Volunteers can sign up for the full week of the Games, February 25-29, or identify pockets of availability.
Local curling superstar Krista McCarville was the first to join the volunteer roster following the formal launch Thursday. An elementary school teacher by trade, and a proud wife and mother, McCarville has been a competitive curler for 23 years. She has competed on local, provincial and national rinks, earning an impressive collection of medals and other recognition. Just some of her many highlights include recurring appearances in Grand Slam Competitive Bonspiels, Pre-Trial and Trial Competitions for the Winter Olympic Games, and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

“Accepting the role of Honorary Chair for the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games was a natural decision for me,” said McCarville. “I feel strongly about spreading the message that just because you may be different, it does not mean you cannot achieve your dreams. I want to assist however I can, to support the Special Olympics athletes in achieving their dreams. I invite our entire community to join me in this effort by signing up as a volunteer for the Games.”
