THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO, June 13, 2020 (LSN) At approximately 09:16hrs on Saturday morning, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a reported airplane crash within the break wall of Thunder Bay Harbour. Upon arrival by initial responding fire crews observed an over turned float plane partially submerged just east of Lakehead Aviation on Shipyard Drive.
The initial TBFR officer on scene prepared to enter the water with an inflatable zodiac boat at the Lakehead Aviation boat launch site while additional TBFR crews launched Harbour Rescue 1 at the Thunder Bay Marina Park location. CFB Trenton Thunder Bay Coast Guard, Thunder Bay Police and Superior North EMS also attended the scene at the incident command location.
Updated information from Thunder Bay Airport indicated that the pilot of the over turned aircraft had been removed with the assistance of an additional float plane pilot who was in the area. The pilot of the overturned aircraft was transported to shore.
Responding TBFR crews donned water immersion suits to check for additional potential victims at the crash site with none being found. The pilot, who was the lone occupant of the over turned aircraft was examined by paramedics on scene and released.
There were no injuries to any other occupants or first responders. A total of 3 Pumpers, a Command unit and two water craft responded to this incident.
