JOINT SUBMISSION FOR SENTENCING.

58 year old MAURICE BEGIN is married to co-accused RHONDA REUBEN. They have 4 children together, 10,11,14 & 15 years old. Two of the children have ADHD and BEGIN derives an income from ODSP. Going to jail is going to be hard on his family.

Crown and defence submit that a 90 day sentence minus time served is enough. BEGIN has served a total of 8 days in custody. That’s enhanced to 12 days. He has 78 day sentence left. With statutory release he will be out in about 48 days.

BEGIN is also sentenced to an 18 month probation period along with a DNA order.

He’s given 18 months to pay a 200$ victim surcharge fine. The sentence is concurrent for both convictions.

JUSTICE VALENTE feels this sentence is in the very low range for this type of offence. But he agrees to accept it.

His Honour states on the record that our communities in Northern Ontario are plagued by methamphetamine and Oxycodone.

BEGIN is given an opportunity to address the court. He has nothing to say.

BEGIN is handcuffed by Thunder Bay Police Special Constables and led out of the courtroom to begin serving his sentence.

His wife RHONDA REUBEN has a court date of May 15, 2018 in Longlac.
