Thunder Bay Summer '22 road construction

Balmoral, Memorial Ave, James street clossed or partly closed

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~~  July 12, 2022 (LSNews) There is road construction going on in Thunder BAy this Summer 

  • Balmoral Street
  • Memorial Ave 
  • James Street

Extended Section of Balmoral Street to Be Fully Closed

 Beginning on Monday, July 11, Balmoral Street between Alloy Drive and Jasper Drive will be closed in both directions. Northbound and southbound traffic will be detoured via Central Avenue. The intersection at Balmoral Street and Central Avenue and will remain open to through traffic on Central Avenue only.

During the closure, Thunder Bay Police Services may be accessed via Central Avenue, and access to Grassroots Church and Evangel Church will be available via Lithium Drive.

The closure is expected to last approximately three weeks.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution near the road work zone.

Paving Work to Begin July 7 on Section of Memorial Avenue

 Pavement resurfacing work will begin on Memorial Avenue between Central Avenue and Second Avenue on Thursday, July 7. The work is expected to take approximately five weeks to complete, but weather conditions and other factors may impact project timelines.

Traffic on Memorial Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction during construction.

Businesses along this section of Memorial Avenue will remain open, but access may be limited while the work progresses. Drivers are asked use adjoining streets to access businesses within the construction zone where possible, and to drive with caution near the construction.

James Street to Close Starting May 18

James Street South, between Victoria Avenue and Arthur  will be closed in both directions for storm sewer work, watermain work, the addition of bike lanes, and road resurfacing. Construction starts tomorrow, Wednesday, May 18. Sidewalks will remain open during construction

Construction is expected to take approximately eight weeks up to complete.

Drivers are asked to take alternate routes, use extra caution, and obey all posted signage when travelling near the construction area.

Thunder Bay maintained its title as the murder capital of Canada in 2018,  For the third consecutive year - and the fourth time in the last five years

 It has been announced again that Thunder Bay is the Murder Capital of Canada for 2018 in Canada for CMAs with populations between 100,000 to less than 500,000 people

Thunder Bay had the highest rate in that category with 6.38 homicides per 100,000.

It’s made Thunder Bay the highest per capita opioid death rate in Ontario.

The 44 deaths were a 40 per cent increase from 2017, a year in which Thunder Bay also held the highest provincial rate.

Between July 2017 and June 2018, nearly 3,900 naloxone kits were handed out by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and local pharmacies, 

 

 

Thunder Bay is that the homicide rate for 2017 is down from 2016 when it stood at 6.62 per 100,000
