US borders with Mexico and Canada will remain restricted to travel through August 21

Kenora riding MPP is disappointed that the U.S. will be keeping their borders closed

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO   ~~~~~~   July 21, 2021  (LSN)  To decrease the spread of COVID-19,  the United States is extending restrictions on non-essential travel at our land and ferry crossings with Canada and Mexico through August 21, while ensuring the continued flow of essential trade and travel.

The latest 30-day extension by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) came after Canada announced on Monday it will start allowing in fully vaccinated U.S. visitors on Aug. 9 for non-essential travel

As a first step, starting August 9, 2021, Canada plans to begin allowing entry to American citizens and permanent residents, who are currently residing in the United States, and have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to entering Canada for non-essential travel. This preliminary step allows for the Government of Canada to fully operationalize the adjusted border measures ahead of September 7, 2021, and recognizes the many close ties between Canadians and Americans.

Kenora riding MP Eric Melillo is disappointed that the U.S. will be keeping their borders closed to Canadians, even as Canada plans to open up to fully-vaccinated Americans.

“While I’m glad that American tourists will soon be able to enter Canada, I’m disappointed that the U.S. border will not be re-opening to Canadians,” MP Melillo stated.

The U.S. government today extended the closure of their land border until at least August 21st. This decision comes days after Canada announced that vaccinated Americans will be able to cross the border starting on August 9th.

Continued restrictions on travel for Canadians will not impact Canada’s plan to re-open. However, Melillo notes, the extended closure will be disappointing news for Canadians separated from friends and loved ones in the United States.

“Canada is fortunate to enjoy a close and mutually beneficial relationship with our neighbours to the south,” Melillo said. “Prime Minister Trudeau must negotiate with President Biden to ensure this important relationship is maintained and restore freedom of movement for Canadians.”
