Superior program, Project SEARCH

Superior program, Project SEARCH

graduating Friday, June 4th

SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN   ~~~~~~~   May 11, 2021  (LSN)  The first group of student interns in the new Superior program, Project SEARCH, will be graduating Friday, June 4th and setting forth into the work world. We will have a short ceremony to recognize all the hard work and achievements the interns have put in this year, as well as recognition for the businesses of Superior who partnered with us. After the ceremony, a lunch will be provided for family, friends, and partners to enjoy the last day of the program, until next year.

Four young adults with disabilities began the new Project SEARCH in hopes of bettering themselves and finding meaningful work. All four will be graduating after completing three unpaid internships and class time this academic year. Some of the internships included: Assistant Teacher at a 3K childcare program, Lab Assistant at Environmental Consulting and Testing Inc., and Accessory Assemblers at Ravin Crossbows. On the job skill learning allowed the young interns to gain social, hands on, and professional skills to help increase their overall employability.

Class instruction is the other main component to the program. The interns have been attending class located at the Superior Business Center to learn a variety of life skills and to reflect on their progress. Some class days focus on learning financial literacy and how to fill out a check. Others have been outings to the grocery store to shop for ingredients with a budget, and then making healthy meals. Another big support to the program was The Strength Factory, who helped contribute to class “Wellness Wednesdays” by offering free kickboxing classes. Project SEARCH covers all areas of adulthood, from healthy relationships to computer skills, again so that the adult interns can have the same chance at community employment as those without disabilities.

Despite facing a new program, higher expectations, virtual learning, and challenges of a pandemic, these young adults have done an amazing amount of growing. They have all improved a tremendous amount, and it shows as they are already becoming employed.

One of the four has been offered and accepted a job at Ravin Crossbows, one of our partner businesses, prior to graduation. He will be working in a production role with minimal job coach support, and most importantly whilst being in an inclusive environment and earning a competitive wage. The other three interns are still actively applying for employment here in Superior and are likely to be hired soon.

These young adults are prime examples of changing the outlook on disability. They exemplify that it is not a “disability”, it is a “different ability”. Many times communities, families, and even schools can underestimate what young people with labeled disabilities can achieve; nevertheless, the first Project SEARCH Superior group has showcased they are limitless
