Spirit of Christmas Concert

Lakehead Choral Group St. Agnes Church

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO, November 18, 2019  (LSN) This past Sunday, November 17, Thunder Bay's own Lakehead Choral Group gave a "preview" performance, with selections from their upcoming Spirit of Christmas concert, at the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre on River Street. Audience members were treated to seasonal choral selections, both traditional and modern - and even humorous! P.D.Q. Bach's "Throw the Yule Log On, Uncle John" was a big hit with a surprise ending. If you'd like to see that ending, plan to attend the full concert at St. Agnes Church in Westfort on Dec. 4.

This was the first time Lakehead Choral Group has given a "sing-out" at the 55 Plus Centre, although the choir has a tradition of performing at seniors' facilities and other venues around the time of their two annual concerts, in December and in April. Audience members at 55 Plus were generous with their applause, and enjoyed the sing-along numbers included in the programme. There were also positive comments about the good acoustic quality of the 55 Plus Centre's auditorium space - this was an unexpected bonus at an all-purpose gathering place, very much appreciated by the choir and enjoyed by the audience.

Lakehead Choral Group was founded in 1956 by the fondly remembered local vocalist and teacher Jim Jewitt, who passed away recently on October 30. The group's first name was "The Jim Jewitt Singers." Several members of Lakehead Choral Group were lucky enough to have Mr. Jewitt as their high-school music teacher at Westgate Collegiate in the 1960s and 70s.

Lakehead Choral Group invites everyone in Thunder Bay to come to their annual Spirit of Christmas concert on December 4 (details below). Enjoy a mix of early, traditional, modern and humorous numbers. "Scots Nativity" is one of the more unusual pieces in the programme - a moving lullaby. Another feature of the performance is "This Christmastide" (Jessye's Carol), made famous by American opera singer and recitalist Jessye Norman, who passed away this fall.

The choir is currently conducted by Susan Korstanje, with Sean Kim as the Accompanist.
