FOUR YEAR SENTENCE FOR RAPE IN YELLOWKNIFE

STANLEY AMERALIK received a four year sentence on Wednesday December 8,2010, a day after an N.W.T. Supreme Court jury found him guilty of sexual assault in connection with the December 29, 2009, incident involving an 18 year old woman at a Yellowknife house party.

AMERALIK , who is originally from Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, received a nine-month credit for time he had served in pretrial custody.

In handing down the sentence, N.W.T. Supreme Court Justice Ted Richard described AMERALIK as a narcissistic person who tells lies easily.

Court heard that AMERALIK had been out of jail for less than two months when he had sex with the woman, who was passed out in a friend's bedroom.

AMERALIK testified that the victim had led him into the bedroom and engaged in consensual sex. He claimed that not only was the victim sexually interested in him, but so were the other women at the house party.

No recollection

But the victim testified that she has no recollection of being with AMERALIK . The woman, who cannot be identified because of a publication ban, said she had met AMERALIK only once prior to the assault.

Another man who was in the house at the time testified that he saw AMERALIK having sex with the woman as she lay unconscious on the bed.

This is AMERALIK’S 44th criminal conviction.

One of his prior convictions was in 2004, he was found guilty of breaking into a Yellowknife hotel room and sexually assaulting a woman there.

Shortly after he was arrested on the latest charge, AMERALIK escaped from police custody as he was being escorted out of the Yellowknife courthouse.

He was found the next day at the local Canadian Tire store, still in handcuffs and shopping for bolt-cutters.

AMERALIK already received a three month sentence for that incident.
