There is a a continuing decline in the number of total active cases” of COVID-19 and “encouraging trends” that the worst of the pandemic’s fifth wave is over in Alberta. “Hospitalizations for COVID-19 may be beginning to plateau, although it is important to note they are still currently higher than at any other time in the pandemic,” Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said. “It’s also important to remember that the health-care system is still under significant strain. This means that any one of us who needs care for any reason should expect that the system might be a little slower right now. If current trends continue, and pressure on our hospitals begins to ease, we will start relaxing COVID restrictions. And we will start with the Restrictions Exemption Program. https://t.co/icwm5TsDE2 — Jason Kenney (@jkenney) February 2, 2022 On another positive story the National Post is reporting that A new study out of Johns Hopkins University is stating that worldwide pandemic lockdowns only prevented 0.2 per cent of COVID-19 deaths and were “not an effective way of reducing mortality rates during a pandemic.” In both Europe and the United States, researchers found that a lockdown could only be expected to bring down mortality rates by 0.2 per cent “as compared to a COVID-19 policy based solely on recommendations.” For context, 0.2 per cent of total Canadian COVID-19 fatalities thus far is equal to about 70 people.
