Fall Hunting And Trapping Season Forecasts

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

MADISON, WISCONSIN  August 31, 2020  (LSN)   Hunters and trappers across Wisconsin are in the final countdown to the fall season openers. To help get ready, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has pulled together the 2020 fall forecast series, which details everything Wisconsinites need to know ahead of the game

Deer

Despite some far northern areas with prolonged deep snow over the past winter, average cold season temperatures across the state were warmer than normal, resulting in moderate conditions in most northern counties. While some winter losses are experienced every year, they were not known to be significant this past winter. Population objectives in most northern deer management

units are to increase deer numbers. In order to achieve those objectives, three northern units will see buck-only deer seasons, and the remaining northern units will provide at least some limited antlerless hunting opportunities

.Upland Game Birds

With the fall seasons nearly here, upland game bird hunters can expect opportunities to get on birds across the state. Pheasant Stocking On Course Despite Pandemic.

In 2019, 40,176 hunters spent 418,480 days pur- suing pheasant. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the DNR has ensured that Wisconsin’s rich pheasant hunting tradition will continue in 2020. The State Game Farm adjust- ed operations this year to safeguard staff while ensuring the health of the pheasant flock. Nev-ertheless, the DNR will stock 50,000 pheasantsthis season

Migratory game bird

Hunters will see improved opportunities throughout the state due to a few changes made for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Hen Mallard Bag Limit Increases For 2020 Season Based on the US Fish and Wildlife Service season framework, the hen mallard daily bag limit will increase from one to two. Northern Duck Zone Opens Earlier This Year The north duck zone will open a week earlier than last year, resulting in an opening date different than the southern and Mississippi zones.

Southern Goose Zone Will Be Open During The Holiday Season This Year There will be a 92-day regular goose season with a second split in the southern zone, with the zone open through Christmas and New Year’ see buck-only deer seasons,
