Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

TWO HARBORS, MINNESOTA  Jan18, 2020   (LSN)  -Ice luminaries, hanging cup candles, and roaring fires are some of the sights found at the annual Split Rock Lighthouse State Park Candlelight Snowshoe and Hike Event. The park holds their annual event the first Saturday in February which is February 1st this year. This event is designed for those who enjoy walking or snowshoeing along trails. This event is only for a short time, 6:00 – 8:30pm. Dress appropriate for the weather, the wind off the lake can be brisk at times. Snowshoes or ice cleats are recommended on this groomed trail.

Over two miles of trail is lit with a combination of ice luminaries and cup candles. Intended for visitors to experience the park in a different way, this event brings family, friends and park supporters together for a magical evening. Start at the Trail Center with a warming wood stove then follow the ice luminaires and hanging cup candles onto the main trail.

After leaving the trail center, the trail parallels the shoreline and you stroll past Ellingsen Island, enjoy the waves meeting the shore as Lake Superior is to your left. Little Two Harbors provides protection from the great lake during times of storms. Imagine yourself a century ago when Norwegian fishermen once lived and worked at this same site. As the trail turns inland, you leave behind the great lake for a quiet forest leading to the park's campsites.

Stop at the roaring campfire at campsite #4, the half way point in the trail. Fairy lights guide you to the fire. Don't forget to enjoy the magic within the trees. Enjoy a roasted marshmallow and share adventures of your day with those around the fire. Leaving the fairy fire, turn left and continue onwards towards Day Hill.

Ice luminaries and cup candles light your way to the top of Day Hill. Then strive up the candlelight trail to the welcoming fireplace on top of Day Hill. On a starry night enjoy the amazing view overlooking Lake Superior. This is the end point of the walk but not of your adventure. Stoll back to the trail center while enjoying the sights and sounds of the lake, forest and world around you. Once returned enjoy hot coco and a cookie while sharing your adventures with others by the wood stove.

Want to help? Volunteers are needed to help set up and staff the fires during the event. Over 300 candles are placed out to light the trail. Be a part of the crew who lights up this event. Contact the park office to sign up or email carolyn.rock@state.mn.us for more information.

For more information please contact the park office at 218-595-7625. A vehicle permit is required to enter Minnesota state parks. Although permits are available at the park, you can save time by getting one in advance. Visit www.mndnr.gov/reservations.

Note that severe weather may cause this event to be changed or canceled. For updates, including event details, weather updates and directions to the park, call 218-595-7625 or check the visitor alert online at www.mndnr.gov/splitrocklighthouse.
