SIJHL BILL SALONEN CUP CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS SET

Red Lake Miners vs Kam River Fighting Walleye

THUNDER BAY, RED LAKE, ONTARIO ~~~~~~   April 18, 2022 (LSNews)    The SIJHL Bill Salonen Cup final matchup is set courtesy of the Red Lake Miners’ defeat of the Dryden GM Ice Dogs game 6 of their semi-final series on Sunday April 17.

The Miners will now meet the Kam River Fighting Walleye who earlier earned their spot finals courtesy of a four-game sweep of the Thunder Bay North Stars which concluded on April 11.

The best-of-seven series will get underway on Thursday April 21 at Kam River’s Norwest Arena in Oliver-Paipoonge and will feature the undisputed top teams in the SIJHL throughout the 21-22 regular season.

Both clubs were also regular staples in the CJHL National Rankings all winter, with Kam River Finishing the season ranked #7 in the country, and Red Lake only one spot behind at #8.

The full schedule for the 2022 SIJHL Bill Salonen Cup Championships is as follows:

  • • Thursday April 21, Red Lake Miners at Kam River Fighting Walleye, 7:30pm EDT, Norwest Arena.
  • • Friday April 22, Red Lake Miners at Kam River Fighting Walleye, 7:30pm EDT, Norwest Arena.
  • • Monday April 25, Kam River Fighting Walleye at Red Lake Miners, 7:30pm CDT, Cochenour Arena.
  • • Tuesday April 26, Kam River Fighting Walleye at Red Lake Miners, 7:30pm CDT, Cochenour Arena.
  • • Thursday April 28, Red Lake Miners at Kam River Fighting Walleye, 7:30pm EDT, Norwest Arena (* if necessary).
  • • Saturday April 30, Kam River Fighting Walleye at Red Lake Miners, 7:30pm CDT, Cochenour Arena (* if necessary) 
  •   Tuesday May 3, Red Lake Miners at Kam River Fighting Walleye, 7:30pm EDT, Norwest Arena (*if necessary)

All games will be streamed live on HockeyTV.

The winner will earn the right to compete as the SIJHL Playoff Champion in the Tim Horton’s Centennial Cup National Junior A Hockey Championship, set to get underway in Estevan, Saskatchewan on Thursday May 19.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  December 6, 2019  (LSN)   Thunder Bay Professional Fire Fighter’s Association (TBPFFA) is urging Thunder Bay City Council to reject recommendations to cut essential Fire Rescue services across the Municipality.  A draft of the new Thunder Bay Fire Strategic Master Fire Plan that will be presented at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, proposes several budget decreases that will negatively impact Fire Rescue response times as well as the general safety of on-duty firefighters.

GERALDTON, ONTARIO December 2, 2019 –(LSN) –  Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Crime Unit investigated as sexual assault complaint that was reported to the Greenstone OPP Detachment on May 23, 2019.

As a result of the lengthy investigation, Henry MAKI, 88-years-old, of Geraldton, Ontario was arrested and charged on November 13, 2019 with the following offences under the Criminal Code:

Officers with the service’s Cyber Crimes Unit started an investigation in October when they located suspicious files that were made available for download.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were originally dispatched to a structural fire in the 600 block of Simpson Street after 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Police, and other emergency first responders, arrived and confirmed that the building at 636H Simpson Street was on fire.

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MINNESOTA,   November 22, 2019  (LSN) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations officers at the International Falls Port of Entry targeted a rail container destined to arrive in Ranier, Minnesota.  CBP officers inspected the rail container and discovered smart watches in violation of intellectual property rights (IPR) regulations. CBP seized 19,752 counterfeit smart watches Wednesday with an estimated manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $592,560, if the goods had been genuine.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO November 22, 2019 - 13:30 (LSN)  Police Media Release States:  A Grey Cup Championship ring stolen from former CFL defensive lineman Stephen Anderson in 2013 has been located and returned.

The ring was stolen, along with a number of other items, from the victim’s vehicle in Thunder Bay on Aug. 22, 2013. The Thunder Bay Police Service began an investigation of Theft Over $5,000.
