Walk ~ Raise awareness of the drug overdose epidemic

Saturday Oct 23rd Starting at 1pm from Walmart Arthur St to City Hall/Kam Park.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~   October 20, 2021 (LSNews)  There is a walk being held to raise awareness of the drug overdose epidemic in our city and for support for all who have lost someone.

Saturday Oct 23rd  Starting at 1pm from Walmart Arthur St to City Hall/Kam Park.

We, as mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, family and friends who have lost a child to what we call a drug induced homicide, want to see changes and action taken. There have been far too many deaths due to drugs being laced with the very deadly drug fentanyl.

The number of cases of overdoses has doubled since 2019.

The drug dealers who are selling these drugs have no conscience or respect for human life. It’s a way to commit the perfect murder. There are cases where people have been “hot shot” with almost all fentanyl because they are of no use anymore.  How do you even prove this?

The judicial system is failing us.  These drug dealers, most of whom are young and from out of town, get busted and put in jail for a very short time.  The police are doing their job and charging them correctly with trafficking which can carry a term of up to life in prison but they are getting out with conditions to not be in Thunder Bay only to be arrested a month or so later for the same thing. We never see any sentencing.

We would like to see the judges and courts start to sentence these drug dealers to some real time with rehabilitation while in jail.

We would also like to see more rehabilitation centres and detox centres that have less wait times.  All too often the wait is too long and it’s too late for some people.  When an addict decides they want to get help, they need it right now, not 6 months down the road, when they may have changed their mind or worse, have died.

This walk is being held to honour and remember our lost loved ones.  We want to see changes made.  We encourage all who can come out to support our cause.
