TBPS MEDIA RELATIONS COORDINATOR SCOTT PARADIS NEVER TOLD THE PUBLIC ABOUT ANY THESE CRIMES OR THE ARREST

A 33 year old PAUL GARY TOWNSEND appeared by video with a black eye swollen shut from the Thunder Bay Jail today, Wednesday November 24,2021 before Justice Joyce Elder to plead guilty to several crimes that the public was never told about.

TOWNSEND will plead guilty to:

  • -break & enter X 2
  • -breach of probation X 3
  • -possession of cocaine for purpose of trafficking
  • -possession of fentanyl.

ADMITTED FACTS

TOWNSEND was released from jail on December 25,2020 and never did report to probation as required. A warrant was issued for his arrest, but TBPS Media Relations Coordinator Scott Paradis never told the public.

On February 27,2021 TOWNSEND broke into a local business, Nalu Web Design at 176 Algoma Street South Unit A and stole $16 087 worth of electronics. He also stole a set of Nike running shoes from a nearby apartment.

TOWNSEND broke into another local business, Nicfit, at 320 Arundel Street Unit B on March 2,2021 and stole between $25 000 & $30 000 worth of vaping supplies.

The public was still not notified about these break & enters.

Local criminal Walter Kis phoned Thunder Bay Police on March 4,2021 to report that he had lent his car to PAUL TOWNSEND several days earlier and it was not returned.

Thunder Bay Police spotted the vehicle at 335 Cameron Street when TOWNSEND exited the vehicle heading to door of home with backpack on.

TOWNSEND was arrested. He was wearing the stolen Nike shoes from Algoma Street and had some stolen vaping supplies in the backpack.

Thunder Bay Police also seized:

  • -15.4 grams of fentanyl
  • -2.2 grams of cocaine
  • -11 grams of crystal methamphetamine

TOWNSEND has been in custody since then and TBPS Media Relations Coordinator Scott Paradis still never told the public.

TOWNSEND has been in custody 264 days which will be enhanced to 396 days.

TOWNSEND has a criminal record starting in 2007 and has spent most of his adult life in jail.

Defense lawyer David Pierce told the court that TOWNSEND’s crimes are fuelled by drug use.

TOWNSEND’S father died in 2017.

TOWNSEND has 3 children that he does not take care of.

TOWNSEND believes he has some Iroquois heritage but is not a status Indian.

TOWNSEND has written letter of apology to the business owners.

Justice Joyce Elder asks TOWNSEND what happened to him regarding his black eye swollen shut.

TOWNSEND tells her he doesn’t know. He was walking in the jail and then woke up after being knocked out unconscious.

Justice Elder sentences TOWNSEND to 2 years less a day.

TOWNSEND has another 333 days to serve and will be statutorily released in less than 8 months.

TOWNSEND will also receive 12 months probation and was given two restitution orders to pay back the cost of the stolen items at $16,000 and $25,000. (It’s unlikely they victims will ever see any money)

TOWNSEND is required to submit his DNA and receives a weapons prohibition.

Inside Edition wonders if TBPS Media Relations Coordinator Scott Paradis had notified the public when the first warrant came out, maybe these businesses wouldn’t have been victimized?
