Temperatures and Fire Hazard's Climbing for the Weekend

Temperatures expected 36 C or pushing hight 90's F

NORTHERN, ONTARIO ~~~~~~  July 2, 2021  (LSN)    High to extreme fire hazard across the Northwest region  The wildland fire hazard is high to extreme throughout the Northwest Region. Residents not residing within the boundaries of the Restricted Fire Zone are asked to consider avoiding all forms of outdoor burning while hazardous conditions persist. 

Northeast Region There were no new fires discovered in the Northeast region by the time of this update. and The fire hazard is low to moderate across the Northeast region.

  • At the time of this update there are 44 active fires in the Northwest Region. Nine fires are not under control, eight fires are being held, 13 fires are under control and 14 fires are being observed. Four fires were called out today. 

Restricted Fire Zone in effect in portion of the Northwest Region  

Due to the high to extreme forest fire hazard, the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry has implemented a Restricted Fire Zone in the Kenora, Fort Frances and Dryden Districts, and southern portions of Sioux Lookout and Red Lake Districts.

The Weather Newwork is reporting Extreme Heat arriving in Northwestern Ontario. 
The dome of intense heat that has been in place over western Canada will move into northwestern Ontario today. Daytime highs will climb into the low- to mid-thirties. Overnight lows will be in the upper teens, providing little relief from the heat. Humidex values near 40 are expected on the weekend.

This extreme heat will last through the weekend and possibly into Monday for some areas.

Saturday temperature will be in the mid 30 while on Sunday 30 to 28c   While pushing 100 F on Saturday and Sunday Monday low 90 to low 80F  

The City of Thunder Bay is  asks residents to check in with vulnerable friends, neighbours, and family to ensure they are not experiencing any difficulties related to the extreme heat. Anyone at risk should be encouraged to remain in a cool place and drink plenty of water. Populations at greater risk include: infants and children, elderly, people with chronic conditions (i.e. heart diseases, respiratory diseases, or asthma), outdoor workers, sports enthusiasts, and people lacking proper shelter, clothing or food.

Residents can take precautions to prevent heat related-injury by:

  • drinking more water more frequently in hot weather to prevent dehydration;
  • reducing exposure to the direct sun and heat by finding shade or cool indoor spaces;
  • wearing loose, light-coloured, breathable clothing and a wide-brimmed hat;
  • avoiding intense or moderately intense physical activity, especially during the hottest part of the day;
  • taking cool showers or baths or using cool wet towels to cool down;
  • when working outdoors, taking regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.
