Ontario Provides Machin with Flood Recovery Support

Ontario Provides Machin with Flood Recovery Support

Funding will help cover costs of emergency response, debris clean up, and repairs to critical infrastructure

NORTHWESTERN, ONTARIO   ~~~~~  March 29, 2021  (LSN)  The Ontario government is providing financial support through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program to help the Municipality of Machin, Ontario  with flood damage recovery efforts.

“Our government is responding to the needs of Northwestern communities affected by flooding,” said Greg Rickford, MPP for Kenora–Rainy River. “Ontario is ensuring that the people of Machin and the municipality has the support it needs to make necessary repairs to critical local infrastructure.”

Significant rainfall in July and September 2019, combined with high water levels in Vermilion Bay, resulted in two separate floods. The Municipality of Machin may be eligible for provincial disaster recovery assistance funding of up to $95,000 for the July 2019 flood, and $78,000 for the September 2019 flood. This funding will help pay for the costs of emergency response and debris clean up as well as local infrastructure repairs to roads and culverts that were damaged by both floods.

“We would like to thank the provincial government for this announcement today,” said Gord Griffiths, Mayor of the Municipality of Machin. “This program is extremely helpful for small municipalities that would have a very difficult time finding the necessary funding for these repairs.”

Ontario’s MDRA program helps municipalities address extraordinary emergency response costs and damage to essential property or infrastructure like bridges, roads and public buildings, as a result of a natural disaster.
