Every Breakfast Counts to launch 2021 programming

donations sought to support future efforts

SAULT STE  MARIE, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~   June 14, 2021  (LSN)    The Every Breakfast Counts committee is pleased to announce that 2021 programming will begin on July 5 and will run for eight weeks with a target of delivering 1,000 meals weekly.

Nutritious food items (including items fresh fruit/vegetables, milk, cheese and  bread) will be distributed free of charge through Algoma Family Services’ Student Nutrition Program, United Way Harvest Algoma, Child Care Algoma EarlyON Child and Family Centre, Sault Ste. Marie District Social Services Community Hubs and the Indigenous Friendship Centre. All staff and volunteers will follow public health recommendations and ensure meals/food are packaged in a safe manner.

Every Breakfast Counts is seeking donations to support future operations, and anyone interested in making a financial contribution is asked to do so through the Algoma Family Services Foundation at: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/algoma-family-services-foundation/ (select Every Breakfast Count).

“Sault Ste. Marie is a caring community, and this has been extended to Every Breakfast Counts through the tremendous support it has received since it was launched in 2018,” said Mayor Christian Provenzano.

“Every Breakfast Counts continues to make a difference and I encourage people to support our efforts if they are able to do so.”

The committee would like to recognize the outstanding support received to date. Thank you to all of the donors, including:

  • Shaw Communications
  • Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council
  • Sault College Child and Youth Care students (W.A.L.K. fundraiser, supported by the Algoma Leadership Table members: Algoma District School Board, Algoma Family Services, Algoma Public Health, Algoma University, City of Sault Ste. Marie, Community Living Algoma, Canadian Mental Health Association, Conseil Scolaire Public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario, District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board, Huron Superior Catholic District School Board, Indian Friendship Centre, John Howard Society, Nogdawindamin Family and Community Services, Sault College, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Thrive Child Development Centre, United Way and Women in Crisis)

“We are grateful for the generosity demonstrated by local organizations and individuals. Through the expertise of our staff developed through Algoma Family Services Student Nutrition Program, we have been able to maximize financial support and ensure we reach the greatest number of community members. The importance of this cannot be overstated. The development of healthy eating habits has a significant impact on helping youth achieve optimal health, growth and intellectual development,” said Emily Tremblay, AFS Community Services Supervisor.

Background

Every Breakfast Counts was conceptualized in the spring of 2018 as a means to address a service gap in the community by providing meals to youth who rely on breakfast programming offered during the school year. $57,000 was raised in only a few weeks; supporting the program’s operation for the summer of 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Ongoing coordination is facilitated by the Every Breakfast Counts committee, comprised of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Mayor and CAO Offices, Sault Ste. Marie District Social Services, United Way Harvest Algoma, Algoma Family Services, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Child Care Algoma and EarlyON Child and Family Centre and the Indigenous Friendship Centre.
