Activists Celebrate the End of Keystone

Activists Celebrate the End of Keystone

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~   January 26, 2021  (LSN)  Last week, the United States government announced it was cancelling the border crossing permit for the Keystone XL pipeline.

The project would have created thousands of jobs for Canadians and Americans (many of them good-paying union jobs) and generate billions in royalties and tax revenues to fund vital public services like schools and hospitals.

The Keystone XL pipeline would have created enormous economic opportunities for First Nations communities. Now, many First Nations leaders who are working to raise their communities out of poverty are ‘devastated’ by the decision.

This decision is horrible news for Canada and a lost opportunity for North America. Instead of being transported on a net-zero pipeline, Canada’s oil resource will now be shipped by rail – a more emissions-intense form of transport.

We’ve lost jobs. We’ve lost revenues. We’ve lost opportunities for Indigenous communities.

Canadians are disappointed.

Yet, there are some who are celebrating this decision.

Canada’s activists are celebrating – and also threatening Canada’s last remaining pipeline project, TMX.  They’re celebrating: lost jobs, lost revenues, and lost opportunities.

A strong and growing Canadian natural gas and oil industry is essential to ensuring our economic recovery. Because the bottom line is, the country is not going to recover unless our national gas and oil industry recovers. So today, when you see Canada’s activists cheering the Keystone XL decision – remember what they’re celebrating. Thank you for your continued support of Canada’s energy industry.
