The Top Sports Stars From Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~~   August 17, 2022 (LSNews)    While the spectacular mesas of Sibley Peninsula fly proudly on our city flag, Thunder Bay is no Sleeping Giant when it comes to sports. We've produced nearly 100 NHL pros, with over 24,000 games between them. The Lakehead Thunderwolves continue to improve in basketball, volleyball and track, and our Border Cats have the honor of being the only Canadian team in the Northwoods League. Chapples Park has been reconstructed and the 2008 USL 2 champions Thunder Bay Chill have made an impressive showing in 2022 after the 2021 season was abandoned due to Covid-19. 100 years ago we were famous for mining silver, but now Thunder Bay is just as known for going for gold. Let's take at look at four hometown heroes

Of the 95 NHL players who've hailed from Thunder Bay, 19 have gone on to star for the Chicago Blackhawks. Fort William-born Tommy Cook was a member of the Hawks first Stanley Cup winning side in 1934 and 'Sharpie' led the Windy City's finest to glory in 2010, 2013 and 2015. For his country, he scored in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Latvia on Canada's route to gold in the 2014 Winter Olympics. He even (briefly) won the title of 'Chicago's Sexiest Athlete' from Victoria's Secret in 2012, until the underwear firm revealed there had been a mistake and the award went to Bulls point guard Derrick Rose. Hanging up his skates after the 2018 season, Patrick is now in demand as a TV hockey analyst, in addition to his coaching work at the University of Vermont.

From hockey's recent past to its present, Thunder Bay native Mackenzie Blackwood tends goal for the New Jersey Devils, which takes its own set of skills, with an emphasis on bravery. Winning the Jim Rutherford Trophy for Ontario League Goaltender Of The Year 2015-2016, Blackwood was signed to by the Devils and spent time in their affiliate sides. He made an instant impact on being called up to the senior squad, and in 2019 featured in Canada's silver-winning side at the World Championships. Last season, however, was an unhappy one for both team and player as Blackwood only featured in 25 games. That said, 9 of those were wins, which gives him a better ratio than his team who slumped to a 27-55 record. As the 2022 season looms, New Jersey are liable to be wide outsiders in the Coral betting odds and veteran head coach Lindy Ruff will look to his young goaltender to compete with new arrival Vitek Vanacek for the starting slot.

Jay Miron

When we think of BMXing, we most likely think of California, Arizona and desert courses. However, the first man to take gold at the X Games in the Bike Dirt category was Thunder Bay native Jay, in 1995. He placed third in the Vert also, and over a 20 year career is credited with inventing over 30 tricks between the ramps and the tracks. These days, you can find Miron in Vancouver, where he's swapped pedals for poplar and pine, turning his hand to making beautiful Scandinavia-inspired furniture.

Canada are still searching for their first Olympic mens' ski gold, but they have a big reputation thanks to the efforts of the 'Crazy Canucks'. Ken Read, Dave Irwin, Dave Murray and Steve Podborski became a phenomenon in the 1970s, taking the game to the Europeans like nobody from the western side of the pond had done before. In 1975, a 21 year old Irwin shocked the world (and Franz Klammer) by taking the World Cup downhill event at Schlaming; beating the Austrian - who had won every race for the prior 18 months - on his home slopes. In 2001 Dave suffered a brain injury on a training run and spent 3 days in a coma. On his recovery, he set up the Dave Irwin Foundation for Brain Injury and was one of the athletes to proudly carry the torch into Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
