Liberal Finance Minister ducks questions about the economy

Liberal Finance Minister ducks questions about the economy

Eric Melillo questioned Minister Chrystia Freeland

OTTAWA, ONTARIO ~~~~~  November 16, 2020 (LSN)   Liberal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland ducked questions from Kenora riding MP Eric Melillo about the government’s economic plan.   Kenora, Dryden, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, North Bay, Ontario

“Patience, colleagues,” Minister Freeland replied, as Melillo asked whether the Liberal government would be presenting a federal budget anytime soon. Canada has been without an economic plan for over 600 days.

Melillo stressed the need to plan for Canada’s economic recovery and prepare for the eventual transition back to normalcy once the virus has been contained.

“As we’ve learned how to better deal with the pandemic and especially as the public health crisis ends and these programs eventually expire, we must allow our economy to get back on track,” Melillo noted. “However, we haven’t seen any plan except for the status quo. So, I’m wondering if the Minister of Finance can tell us, what is the plan to get this economy off of life support?”

“I think it is so important for us to appreciate, we are in a second wave of the coronavirus,” the Finance Minister replied, sidestepping the subject of the economy. She gave a similar response when asked if the government had a plan for rapid testing.

The exchange occurred in Committee of the Whole earlier this month, as MPs debated an extension to the federal wage subsidy for businesses and amendments to the commercial rent subsidy.

It’s very disheartening when the Finance Minister won’t answer basic questions about Canada's economy. It’s clear that the Liberal government has no plan to restart our economy, even as their current policies are continuing to fail businesses and workers.

Melillo also raised the issue of flaws in the Liberal support programs, including “onerous criteria, inflexible timelines, and…a lack of clarity,” and asked if the government would consult with businesses to ensure the amended programs work as intended.

He concluded by asking why the government took so long to fix obvious flaws in these programs, especially since the Conservative opposition spent months raising alarms and proposing reforms.

“I am grateful for all the great ideas we hear in this House, and I’m really glad that we’re gonna support this important legislation,” Minister Freeland replied, once again avoiding accountability.

“It’s very disheartening when the Finance Minister won’t answer basic questions about the economy,” Melillo said afterward. “It’s clear that the Liberal government has no plan to restart our economy, even as their current policies are continuing to fail businesses and workers.”
