Four Weddings and an Elvis

Cambrian Players Theatre Opens March 4th

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  February  22, 2020  (LSN)  A Las Vegas wedding chapel with an owner who has seen it all; a cast of eccentric but entertaining characters; and the King.  What more could a bride ask for?  Come and find out—take a virtual trip to sunny Vegas in early March when Four Weddings and an Elvis by Nancy Frick opens at Cambrian Players Theatre, 818 Spring Street.

Cambrian Payers set designers, Donna Goodman and Margaret Johnston, have created a set that will make you forget the snow as you gaze at palm trees and pastel colours, and feel as though you have been transported to the warmth of Vegas for real. The designers’ vision has been brought to life by the set-constructor, Cambrian’s multi-talented and multi-tasking Jerry Silen, a handy man with a set of tools! (To prove how he really “can do everything” Jerry is also an actor in the production—he and Julie McCoy-Goertz play Stan and Bev, who are getting together because each has been jilted by a spouse.  Will they find happiness in Sandy’s Chapel of Love?  And how will an Elvis-impersonator turned Justice of the Peace, played by John Pidgen-Welyki, get involved?

Four Weddings and an Elvis Cambrian Players Lake Superior NewsSandy herself, the cynical and much-married proprietor of the chapel where the play is set, is played by Jessica McNabb. Sandy has seen it all—or has she?  The couples who visit during the play pack a good few surprises, even for her.  But who will do the marrying?  Sandy has to scramble to find someone to officiate.  As it turns out, a candidate to become her new minister, Lou (played by Ken Horton), a widower looking for employment, was one of the earliest Elvis impersonators, and he’s not sure he is ready to give up the role….

The other couples who arrive at the chapel could not be more of a contrast—though in the end each love-story illustrates the theme that “there’s someone for everyone” and proves that “love conquers all.” Both long-time Cambrians and newcomers make up this delightful ensemble cast—and they are a quirky crew. Absolutely NOT “going postal” is shy and withdrawn postal worker Marvin (Chris Jason), with his improbable fiancée Fiona, a tough-as-nails bank-robber (Katie Maki).  Their love-story is complicated by the arrival of Fiona’s former boyfriend “Fist”, an escaped convict (Rory Ryan).  Then we have a pair of veteran movie-stars, both determined to hang onto their faded glamour, Bryce Cannon and Vanessa Wells, played by John Condon and Ginette Roy.

These couples’ stories combine to make an upbeat evening’s entertainment with many a laugh and wry moment.  As in every comedy, it is all in the timing--and director, Gabe Ferrazzo, ensures that this is a finely-tuned production.  Gabe has directed dozens of varied productions for Cambrian, and acted in many more; his expertise always ensures a fun night for all—both on and off stage—and Four Weddings and an Elvis is guaranteed to deliver a fine night out.

This is the fourth fully-staged production at the Cambrian Players Spring St Theatre, and the audiences appreciate the professional-level productions, the cozy hall, padded chairs, and excellent acoustics. As well as three mainstage plays every year, you can attend our Greenroom series, where plays of an edgy or controversial nature are given prepared readings, and the audiences pay a modest fee at the door.  Or you can come to our Improv nights, for $5.

All these events are held in the building—the former Polish Hall--which Cambrian Players bought in 2018.  Since the hundred-year-old structure was purchased, it has been all about teamwork.  Both the Board and Friends of Cambrian have done a marvelous job of turning an intimate venue into a working theatre while maintaining this heritage building in good condition.  After 70 years moving from rented venue to rented venue, the group has found that owning their own building, especially such a venerable one, brings a host of surprises, most of them weather-related. A lot of ingenuity is being deployed so that a not-for-profit can raise the funds to put on a new roof, add new doors, and refurbish this historic building.

Four Weddings and an Elvis (produced by special arrangement with Samuel French) runs March 4 – 7 and March 11-14 at 818 Spring Street (the former Polish Hall).  The play begins at 7:30 pm. and the doors open at 7:00 pm. Tickets ($25 and $20) are available from Fireweed, Calico, at — and at the door.  Please note that there are stairs up to the doors, and down to the bathrooms, and that the building is not at present wheel-chair accessible.  Queries can be sent to [email protected]
