Walleye Vs. Northstars: This weekend

At Norwest Arena

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~  November 26, 2021 (LSNews)  ON-With home-ice advantage, and 24 hours to go, the Kam River Fighting Walleye will be facing off on Friday and Saturday night against their cross-town rivals, the Thunder Bay North Stars. After last weekend’s clean record and over-time win against the Red Lake Miners, the Fighting Walleye currently hold first place in the SIJHL, and nevertheless, are looking to defend their position coming out of this weekend’s series.

Having won the last 10/11 games, with the exception of November 17th’s loss against the North Stars, the Walleye are heading in to this weekend with an extra chip on their shoulders to protect they’re perfect 8-0 home game winning streak.

Fighting Walleye’s head coach, Matt Valley, gives his two cents for this weekends local showdown: “It’s certainly a different feeling when we play the North Stars. I'm sure that's true for them as well playing us. This cross town rivalry was set in stone before the puck even dropped last year. Fast forward to now and looking at this weekend, I think it goes without saying that this series is going to be entertaining. While we respect one another, there's no friends come Friday night. I imagine that the pond is going be packed and our hometown Fighting Walleye fans will be loud and proud. Our staff fully expects that our group will feed off of that. We are on a solid run lately outside of last Wednesday’s game; they played well, you have to give them credit. But, our players know that it's time to show up ready to play our brand of hockey and execute a bit more against these guys.”

At this point the Walleye has a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 2.19, which is currently the lowest in the SIJHL, with a 91.4 percent success rate on the Penalty Kill, having only surrendered 7 Powerplay goals, while scoring 4 short handed goals. The Fighting Walleye’s stats are nothing short of validating just how strong the Kam River Fighting Walleye are this season.

With the likely debut of Walleye’s recent addition, Colin Mcleod who stands at  6’5” and 270 lbs, it goes without saying that this weekend’s series is sure to bring an extra dose of physicality and competition to Norwest Arena.
