WOMAN WHO MADE FALSE ABDUCTION REPORT SENTENCED TO 6 MONTHS HOUSE ARREST

WOMAN WHO MADE FALSE ABDUCTION REPORT SENTENCED TO 6 MONTHS HOUSE ARREST

TH UNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~  December 2, 2020  (LSN)  A 31 year old SHEENA SLANEY appeared by phone today, Tuesday December 1,2020 before His Honor, Justice Frank Valente to plead guilty to public mischief.

Crown Attorney Piera Pasloski and Defence  Attorney Richard Garrett have a joint submission for Justice Valente to consider

ADMITTED FACTS

SHEENA SLANEY phoned Thunder Bay Police on September 17,2019 around 8am to report that 3 black males had attempted to abduct her.  Hardworking TBPS Officers responded quickly to investigate this serious allegation.  SLANEY told police that on the evening of September 16,2019 that she was walking down Red River Road and that 3 black males in a gray SUV pulled up to her and attempted to force her into the vehicle.

THE INVESTIGATION

Hardworking Thunder Bay Police Officers took this report very seriously and dedicated a lot of resources to investigate.  Numerous businesses in the area were attended to and video surveillance footage was acquired and reviewed extensively by Officers. Police concluded that there was no gray SUV with 3 black males in the area.  SHEENA SLANEY was criminally charged with public mischief.

JOINT SUBMISSION

Defence Attorney Richard Garrett has negotiated a very good deal for his client.  The joint submission is 6 months Conditional Sentence Order (house arrest) and 12 month of probation. SLANEY has a criminal record that begins in 2011.  She has several convictions for violence  as well as mischief.  Her last criminal conviction was May 11,2019 for breaching court orders.  SLANEY is a mother of 5 children and has some mental health issues including Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder. Only 3 of her children are in her care. SLANEY has a Grade 11 education and collects  $420 monthly on welfare.  SLANEY is originally from the Mahmalillikullah 1 Indian Reserve in British Columbia.

SENTENCING

Justice Valente tells the court that “There was no reason or motive for this crime. There are only so many resources available. Police took this investigation seriously and a significant investigation resulted. Police can’t be wasting all these resources”   His Honor finds the previous criminal convictions of mischief to be aggravating.  He agrees to accept the joint submission of 6 months house arrest and 12 months of probation. SLANEY has conditions:

  • -no alcohol or drugs
  • -participate in any programing or counselling ordered by the Community Sentencing Supervisor
  • -no weapons
  • -remain inside at all times except for medical emergency
  • -allowed out every Wednesday & Saturday from 1pm to 4pm to acquire the necessities of life
  • -only allowed out with Supervisor’s written approval
  • -keep the peace and be of good behaviour

SLANEY’S probation order will have the same conditions minus the house arrest condition.

THE REAL WASTED POLICE RESOURCE

As per usual practice, the Director of Communications at TBPS never notified the public about SLANEY’S arrest.  There are currently over 135 000 taxpayer dollars dedicated to a person who has difficulty communicating.  Perhaps those funds should go to additional police officers?  The Police Chief and Police Services Board have done nothing to improve communications at TBPS
