New Case in Ontario

TORONTO, ONTARIO  February 24, 2020  (LSN)  Ontario’s newest case of the novel coronavirus has now been confirmed as positive, though health officials say her illness is mild.

The woman in her 20s recently returned from China and had an intermittent cough that had been improving.

Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s associate chief medical officer of health, says the case is a “low positive” and initially came back as borderline, or inconclusive.

Ontario health officials have announced a new presumptive case of novel coronavirus in Toronto two days after all cases were cleared in the province.

The latest presumptive case of COVID-19 is a woman from China who landed in Canada on Feb. 21, according to a statement by Ontario’s Ministry of Health.

A seventh case of the novel coronavirus has been diagnosed in British Columbia, bringing to 11 the number of cases in Canada.Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Monday a man in his 40s who is a close contact of the sixth case in the province has been diagnosed with COVID-19.The man had symptoms before the woman’s diagnosis, Henry said.

Shutting out Chinese travelers and trade could actually make it harder to tackle the COVID-19 outbreak, according to Canada’s Health Minister, Patty Hajduas some call for a complete closure of the border.

Patty Hajdu says even if Canada blocked all travel to and from China, people could find alternative routes and lie about where they’ve been, making it even harder to screen people coming in.

The deadly coronavirus is looking a lot like the theoretical “Disease X” that officials have long warned could spark a dangerous pandemic, a World Health Organization expert said.

Marion Koopmans, a member of WHO’s emergency committee, said the virus is the first to meet the criteria of the so-called “Disease X” — defined as a quick-spreading and unpredictable illness caused by a previously unknown pathogen, Daily Express reported.

The six labs — in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, and New York City — are already part of the nationwide influenza surveillance network, and they conduct regular monitoring of all types of viruses. At the labs, samples from sick people are tested for various pathogens, creating a big-picture look at how much various diseases are spreading through the community.
