SO YOU WANT TO SAVE THE CONSERVATORY?

SO YOU WANT TO SAVE THE CONSERVATORY?

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~ September 24, 2020  (LSN)  The city is looking at the closure of the Conservatory, eight outdoor rinks and Chapples and Strathcona Golf Courses, as well as other facilities. So be it.

Should any citizen wish to mount a spirited defense of any of them, have at it.

The city doesn’t listen. Look at the record.

The Prime Minister himself declared there would be no federal money for professional spectator facilities. City “leaders” forged ahead anyway with what would come to be known as the “Events Centre Fiasco”. City council committed 5 million dollars of taxpayer money, withholding the application for funding until after the municipal election so they wouldn’t be held accountable for the inevitable response - paraphrased here as: how many times and how many ways do we have to tell you that we don’t fund professional hockey rinks? City council acted brazenly to defend itself, not you or your tax dollars.

As for Dease Pool. The city organized its destruction over two weeks at Christmas, and aggressively shut down any attempt by citizens to preserve the historic facility.

Look at the soccerplex. Even in the middle of a pandemic, with citizens, the Chamber of Commerce, the CEDC and Tourism Thunder Bay urging a go-slow approach, council refused to postpone the project for even 90 days until the economic effects of Covid-19 would become more clear. City Hall would divide a council (7-6) to assert their bloody- minded determination.

Public policy at city hall is a closed shop. Your opinion is not sincerely solicited, and it is definitely not wanted. The disappearance of the Chippewa animal exhibit came out of the blue. Not even children’s posters in defense of their pool could be allowed their public display in Victoriaville.

Be mindful of the lesson City Hall has already taught our children: decisions made by the executive management team at City Hall are none of their business. And it isn’t ours either.

Defend the Conservatory if you want. You are wasting your time and just providing cause for council’s amusement.

They have had sufficient fun for one term.
