Sergeant Frederick Davidson Memorial Bridge Dedication

Sergeant Frederick Davidson Memorial Bridge Dedication

Greater Sudbury Police Service

SUDBURY, ONTARIO  ~~~~  September 24, 2020  (LSN)  Today we recognized Sgt. Fredrick Alexander Davidson and the ultimate sacrifice he made on July 11th 1937 – 83 years ago. It is also fitting that we recognized Sgt. Davidson’s sacrifice, today as the first day of the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Virtual Run which raises awareness of the Annual Memorial Service and pays tribute to those officers who have so valiantly given their lives in service of their community and country. Today, GSPS runners have commenced the first leg of their 3-day #VirtualRun from the Sgt Fredrick Davidson Bridge.  (Sault Ste Marie, Thunder Bay, Ontario)

On the 11th of July, 1937, as Sergeant Frederick Davidson attempted to question two men who were changing licence plates on a vehicle, one of the men pulled a gun and shot him multiple times. Unfortunately, Sergeant Davidson succumbed to his injuries 10 days later on 21 July 1937. Despite this incident occurring 83 years ago, it serves as a stark reminder of the uncertainty and inherent risk police officers face every day on duty. In light of that risk, it also serves to highlight their unrelenting commitment to community safety and well-being. It also extends to their families - it is this family support that sees them off to work each day hoping for a safe shift. Today, with this bridge dedication, we remember and honour the ultimate sacrifice made by Sgt. Fred Davidson and we continue to honour all of our Fallen Heroes over the coming days.

Mayor Brian Bigger, Greater Sudbury Police Services Board Vice Chair Lise Poratto-Mason and Chief Paul Pedersen will bring remarks prior to the unveiling, followed by the Piper’s Lament by Retired Staff Sergeant and Pipe Master Dave Linney. There will then be a moment of silence and reflection, followed by the unveiling.

This will also be the launch of this year’s virtual 460km Peace Officers’ Memorial Run that usually starts in Toronto and ends in Ottawa leading up to Sunday, September 27, 2020 marking National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day. At the conclusion of the bridge dedication our Sudbury Police Run Club will depart from the staging area and run to the Sergeant Rick McDonald Memorial Bridge at the Highway 17 by-pass. This will be the first leg of three days of running for our run team.
