J & W Gas Bar and Charlie’s Grill

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~  July 28, 2020  (LSN)  J & W Gas Bar is a family owned business serving the First nation communities of Northwestern Ontario and Thunder Bay since 1975.

Nothing in our past prepared us for what hit us in 2020.  J & W GAS withstood the COVID19 pandemic like everyone else, except as a business deemed by the provincial government as an essential service, the Chief and Council of the Fort William First Nation decided that the only way to keep the virus from entering the community was to shut down everything, including all privately owned businesses from April 11th – til May 4th of this year.

As a part of the provincial close down of businesses on March 16th, an intrigual part of our business is our restaurant, known for its Pickeral Fridays, Charlie’s Grill was only allowed take out and curb side reducing their business 80%. As the month of March continued the First Nation started incorporating new policy forcing all business to certain curfews, first 8:00pm then 6:00pm then 4:00pm to reduce traffic toward community and finally the shut down.

On May 4th as a part of Ontario reopening, the First Nation allowed us to open with reduced hours, but low and behold the City of Thunder bay closed James street underpass for 9 weeks due to construction adding detours and further frustrating our patrons.

On June 8th the Government of Ontario allowed restaurants to serve outside on patio’s and on June 11th, Charlie’s Grill opened its patio. The patio has been a big hit as the weather has cooperated to date almost capturing 70% of its sales back.
