Myself and two Friends

TORONTO, ONTARIO  July 22, 2020  (LSN)  This journey throughout Northern Ontario is a culmination of wanderlust and perfect timing. Two friends, and myself will be traveling from the hectic buzz and stir of Toronto’s city life, and heading north along Lake Superior to enjoy the beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

We will be camping at four different sites, and staying in two northern towns during our 11 day road trip. Personally, I have never gone further north than Sault St Marie, and I am excited to gawk at the pristine wilderness that Lake Superior has to offer. This page will document our travels and experiences at each campsite and town that we have the opportunity to encounter, as well as the history behind the land. I am excited to share everything my friends and I do and hope to enlighten others to step out of their comfort zone and into the abundant wilderness of Northern Ontario.

Our itinerary is brimming to say the least. We will be leaving our home city of Toronto and heading north to Killarney Provincial Park. We will be camping at George lake for two nights, and will be hiking The Crack Trail,  and doing day trips around the area for the first two days of the trip. We will then be heading seven hours north to Lake Superior Provincial Park. We will be camping at Agawa Bay for two nights. Amidst swimming and watching the sunset, we will also be hiking the Nokomis Trail and visiting Agawa Canyon Park. Agawa River encompasses generations of Ojibwe culture through pictographs (ancient drawings) illustrated on the cliffs.

After four nights of camping, we will be treating ourselves with a break by staying at a quaint Inn in Red Rock, Ontario, about an hour west of Thunder Bay, and facing the Nipigon Bay. Here we will not only be enjoying the luxury of wifi and a clean bed, but we will be exploring the town and will be hiking the Nipigon River trail. The town, once only accessible by rail and resembling farm land, now still remains as quaint as its beginnings with a population under one thousand.

We will be backtracking about two hours west to Neys Provincial Park. We will be camping for two nights at Neys, and again will be enjoying the rustic charm of the deep woods and sandy beaches. We will be hiking Pic Island Overlook trail, and, of course will be doing a small photo shoot once we reach the top. However before Neys was a provincial park, it held prisoners not campers. During WWll the area was used as a prison for German soldiers between 1941-1946. The nearest city is Marathon, ON.

After our two night stay at Neys, we will be heading further north to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park for one night. This stop will be our most northern point of the trip. Here we will be relishing in our accomplishments atop the Head Trail overlooking the rugged cliffs along Sibley Peninsula. Sleeping Giant is believed to be “The Spirit of Deep Sea Water” in Ojibway culture, and turned to stone when a white man was given the location to a nearby silver mine.

After the uphill battle, we will be returning south, heading to Harmony Bay for a relaxing night in an Airbnb cottage. This will be our last stop before returning home to Toronto.

As prepared as we are, there will be unexpected obstacles along the way, and we have come to terms with that. We are planning to soak up every day with adventure and gratefulness, in order to grasp all the wonders that Northern Ontario has to offer. We hope to not only leave the land better than we found it, but to be gracious of our surroundings and anyone we encounter along the way. We have provided a map to follow along with us and see the specific spots we will be visiting. This page will constantly be updated with our activities and pictures. Bye for now.
