Monkeypox hits Ontario

Monkeypox hits Ontario

THUNDER BAY, TORONTO, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~  May 23, 2022 (LSNews)  Toronto Public Health, the first suspected case of monkeypox in the city is in an adult male in his 40s who is currently "stable and recovering" in hospital.

Toronto Public Health has warned people who may have attended two different public places that they may have been exposed to the illness.

People who went to an event hosted by Prism at The Axis Club located at 722 College St. on May 14 or went to Woody's bar at 467 Church Street on May 13 or 14 may have been in contact with the infected person.

Monkeypox is a virus that can cause symptoms including fever, aches and presents with a distinctive bumpy rash.

The virus is usually spread via bodily fluids such as respiratory droplets from "prolonged face-to-face contact" and fluids from the sores that could come in contact with clothes, bedding and other items.

TPH is advising anyone who may have come in contact with the virus to monitor for symptoms for 21 days. If any develop, they should self isolate, get tested and get medical care.

As of Saturday, 92 confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox have been reported from 12 member states that are not endemic for the virus, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

One vaccine, JYNNEOSTM (also known as Imvamune or Imvanex), has been licensed in the United States to prevent monkeypox and smallpox. Because monkeypox virus is closely related to the virus that causes smallpox, smallpox vaccine can also protect people from getting monkeypox. Past data from Africa suggests that smallpox vaccine is at least 85% effective in preventing monkeypox. The effectiveness of JYNNEOSTM against monkeypox was concluded from a clinical study on the immunogenicity of JYNNEOS and efficacy data from animal studies.

Germany's health minister on Monday expressed concern about monkeypox outbreaks and said the country was due to release quarantine guidelines on Tuesday after reporting three cases.

At this time there is not information on the Thunder Bay District Health Unit website about Monkeypox
