2019 2020 Season

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  March 31, 2020  (LSN)  In a less traditional celebration, outstanding achievements were recognized by Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association (TBMHA) with an online Banquet on March 29th. 2020. Hockey Canada put an end to the local hockey season on March 13, 2020 due to the Covid - 19 pandemic before completion of the playoffs. Included in Hockey Canada's memorandum was prohibition of banquets and social gatherings to end the season.

 

A volunteer coach approached the Executive of Thunder Bay Minor with the idea of hosting a "virtual banquet" on Facebook live. It was viewed as a way to put a positive end to the season and the Executive green lighted the idea for Sunday's celebration. 4 divisions of minor hockey for kids between 13 and 18 are run by TBMHA. Award winners for each of these divisions were announced in the 15 minute broadcast.

Four league wide awards were also presented:

The Al Massaro Don’t Quit Award: A Bantam A player who displays the most desire, dedication and determination to play hockey no matter what adversity and challenges they face was won by Andrew Makela of the KC Sabres 

Kade Armstrong of the Westfort Rangers was selected as the winner of the DANNY COX MEMORIAL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD, Awarded annually to a Midget Age Player that shows and exemplifies sportsmanship towards the game of hockey.

The TOM FRIDAY "GOOD GUY" AWARD, Awarded annually to a Deserving Coach with minimum 3 years involvement in Thunder Bay Minor.  Coach should exemplify dedication, promote fair play, act in a gentlemanly manner, be a good role model and have a genuine commitment to the game was won by Wayne Fortes of the Westfort Maroons. 

Dave Gibbs of the Thunder Bay Beavers wone the LOUIS MATARAZZO MEMORIAL HUMANITARIAN AWARD, awarded annually to a Dedicated Individual who has unselfishly devoted much time, effort, and energy to Minor Hockey.
