Celebrating announcement that 60 new TTC street cars

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO   ~~~~~~  May 12, 2021   (LSN)  This afternoon, Premier Doug Ford spoke to employees at Thunder Bay’s Alstom plant about today’s announcement that Alstom will build 60 streetcars for the TTC

Premier Doug Ford Speach

Thanks, everyone for being here.

I am so happy to be able to speak with you today. It’s such a great day for Alstom, Thunder Bay and all of Ontario.

Thank you, Dominic, for helping us get this arranged, you’re an absolute champion for your team up there.

First I want to thank Minister Mulroney who has led the charge on seeing this past the finish line.

And I also want to say a big thanks to Ministers Rickford and Surma for all the work they’ve done to make sure this announcement was possible…

And to Jerry Dias for his tireless efforts to ensure this got done.

And I do have to acknowledge our partners in Ottawa and Toronto for their part in this. It was definitely a Team Canada effort and we are grateful for that partnership.

And the result of that is over $550 million dollars being invested for 60 brand new streetcars for the TTC, being produced right there at Alstom in Thunder Bay.

Improving transit has been a top priority for me personally, long before I became Premier.

This government remains fully committed to getting Ontario moving again, and this has been an incredible week on that front. Yesterday we announced that we have full funding to proceed with building the Ontario line, which is the largest subway expansion in Canadian history.

And to meet these rapidly growing transit needs, we will continue to need many more new vehicles to meet this increasing demand.

Luckily for us, we have the best manufacturing anywhere in the world…right here in Ontario.

And this investment will ensure we have first class, Made-In-Ontario streetcars for years to come…

And that means steady, well paid jobs and support for our friends at Alstom up in Thunder Bay.

I want to thank each one of you for your part in this, because it would not be possible without the highly skilled and dedicated workforce in the plant.

We know we can count on you to deliver for us, and you will always have our support.

Thank you all, and God bless.

As a part of this deal, which is subject to Treasury Board approval, the Government of Canada would provide up to $180 million in funding to enable the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to purchase a total of 60 zero-emission streetcars and expand their Hillcrest storage facility in Toronto.

The Government of Ontario is also investing $180 million and the City of Toronto is investing $208 million towards the streetcars and facility upgrades, for a total investment of $568 million. The TTC will procure these streetcars from an existing competitively-procured contract with Alstom, which acquired Bombardier Transportation on January 29. Fulfilling the TTC’s immediate need for 60 additional streetcars will help sustain the Thunder Bay plant in the short term, and could also create a bridge to longer term transit procurement projects.
