Northland Hotel is Gone

Northland Hotel is Gone

For Journey to Life Centre

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~~  October 28, 2020  (LSN)  The Salvation Army building on Cumberland St. was demolished on Monday as part of the construction of the new Journey to Life Centre.  Bruno’s Contracting began the demolition about mid morning and everything was pulled down by the end of the day.  The debris will be removed over the next several days.

Once the building has been removed, the parking lot will be installed.  The final landscaping will be completed in the spring including the Rotary Field of Greens garden and recreational area.

The building was erected in the mid 1950’s.  It was originally the Northland Hotel.  The property was transferred to The Salvation Army and a shelter was opened here in 1971.  Over the years, services have expanded to include long term housing for men with mental health issues through the Homes for Special Care program in partnership with St. Joseph’s Care Group, a halfway house for men on early parole with Corrections Services Canada, food bank, breakfast program, soup van ministry, and other community based programs.

The old building has served our community well but now it is time to bid farewell to this longstanding facility.

The new Journey to Life Centre will see a focus on change.  It will be a stepping stone to a better place for the people we serve.  Already, the new environment is having a positive impact on our residents.  They tell us they love their new rooms.  Some are telling us they have never lived in a new building.  They are thrilled to be here and are looking forward to the new opportunities that they will have to learn new living skills.

The $2.5 million capital campaign is nearing completion with another $650,000 left to raise.  For more information about the new Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre or to make a donation to the capital campaign, call 345-6492.
