Norm Foster’s LUNENBURG

Romantic Comedy Next Up at Magnus Theatre

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~  October 14, 2021  (LSNews)  This autumn, Magnus Theatre invites audiences to a summer weekend on the coast in Norm Foster’s LUNENBURG. This charming romantic comedy marks the fourteenth of Foster’s works produced at Magnus Theatre since the world premiere of BRAVADO in 1988.
Set in the eponymous port town in Nova Scotia, LUNENBURG tells the story of Maine resident Iris Oulette, who finds herself on the east coast of Canada visiting a newly inherited property she never knew existed. When shocking secrets come to light, Iris and her friend Natalie face a series of personal revelations and heart-warming transformations bound to tickle the belly and touch the heart.

“Norm Foster is known as Canada’s most produced playwright, and Magnus Theatre audiences really enjoy his work,” said Magnus Theatre Artistic Director Thom Currie. “The charm in his writing allows relatable themes to be explored from different angles, using humour throughout not only to entertain audiences in the moment, but to leave them with something to think about.”

Some of Foster’s work produced in recent years at Magnus Theatre include HERE ON THE FLIGHT PATH in 2017, THE LADIES FOURSOME in 2016, and STORM WARNING in 2013.

LUNENBURG is directed by Thom Currie, with set design by David A. Brown and lighting design by Adam Parboosingh. Brown is a seasoned carpenter and accomplished display designer who is debuting his first professional theatre set. Parboosingh is a talented Winnipeg-based artist and University professor who most recently worked with Magnus Theatre on BUYING THE FARM in 2019, as well as numerous Theatre For Young Audiences tours throughout the years.

The cast for LUNENBURG is comprised of a trio of gifted local actors. Sheena Albanese makes her Magnus Theatre stage debut as Iris. Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Albanese is very excited to be a part of the upcoming show. With theatre training from the graduate program at University of Guelph, Albanese is well-known in the local theatre scene as an actor, director, and producer. Some favourite roles include lsobel in LION IN THE STREETS (Way Way Off Broadway), Snake Handler in TALKING WITH (Occassional Arts Productions) and Rose in DANCING AT LUGHNASA (Cambrian Players). For the past eight years, she has also been a member of the team behind the 10X10 Showcase of original ten-minute plays produced annually in Thunder Bay.

Returning to the Magnus Theatre stage are Amy Sellors as Natalie and Andrew Cecon as Charlie. Local audiences may remember Amy Sellors as Patsy Cline in last year’s outdoor production of A CLOSER WALK WITH PATSY CLINE. Other Magnus Theatre credits include Fay, Angel, and Gwen in HERE ON THE FLIGHT PATH, Berthe in BOEING BOEING, Magenta and Trixie the Usherette in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, Oz in WE WILL ROCK YOU, Nina in LOOKING, and Bernice in DON'T HUG ME. Sellors’ extensive theatre career has taken her across Canada and to Western Europe, and she spent several seasons at the Stratford Festival, where she appeared in MY FAIR LADY, THE THREEPENNY OPERA, GIGI, and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.

Andrew Cecon has spent most of his adult life performing in theatres across Western Canada, before returning to Thunder Bay a few years ago. He has appeared at Magnus Theatre in MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, BANG BANG, and most recently A CLOSER WALK WITH PATSY CLINE in 2020.

LUNENBURG runs from October 21st until November 6th, with evening performances starting at 7:30 pm. Saturday and Sunday matinees start at 2:00 pm and Wednesday matinees at 12:00 pm. Tickets for evening performances are $40 ($20 for students) and matinees are $35 ($15 for students). There will be a Pay What You Can matinee performance on Sunday, October 24th. Tickets are available on Magnus Theatre’s website at magnustheatre.com or through the box office by phone at 807.345.5552.
