LABOUR ACTION CENTRE OPENED

LABOUR ACTION CENTRE OPENED

BOMBARDIER for Workers

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - December 2, 2019  (LSN)  –  A Labour Action Centre that will provide supports to workers laid off because of the work reduction at Bombardier Transportation was officially opened Friday.

According to Bombardier Labour Adjustment Committee Chair, Iain Angus, the Centre’s mandate is to “ support the adjustment process for workers, employers and community partners affected by economic and labour market change and to help employees being laid-off deal with the effects of losing their jobs, help them review their options and plan their next steps.

Anyone who has been laid off, regardless of which union they are a member of or if they are not represented by a union are not only welcome to use the Centre but are encouraged to do so.”

Former employees of the plant have been hired to coordinate the work of the centre and to act as peer helpers to laid off workers and their families. Counselling services will also be provided.

“When there is a big layoff, it affects not only workers, but also their families and the larger community. That’s why this Action Centre is so important by supporting this Centre, we support the people of Thunder Bay,” said Jane McKenna, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. “I want to thank UNIFOR, the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Uniont (COPE), Bombardier and all the partners that made this centre possible.”

Angus noted that the Labour Action Centre is for all workers and their families, not just those represented by UNIFOR and COPE.

The Bombardier Labour Action Centre is located at 112 Gore Street, West in the UNIFOR Local 1075 Office Building and is open daily Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. The office remains open until 5:30 on Thursday.
