THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO,  November 20, 2019  (LSN) This holiday season, the Magnus Theatre stage is transformed into a 1940s radio station for It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. Echoing the live radio plays of yore, this Joe Landry adaptation of the beloved holiday classic film features an ensemble of incredible performers bringing dozens of characters to the stage. Known as a play within a play, this five-actor cast dons the fashions reminiscent of radio’s golden age and performs the script as various characters from the classic film. Aided by inventive Foley design, the actors create the sound effects on-stage to transport and delight audiences from stage, to studio, to Bedford Falls and back again.
Hailed as one of the most treasured holiday films of all time, It’s A Wonderful Life tells the story of idealistic George Bailey, a man whose recent circumstances lead him to consider ending his own life one Christmas Eve. In the true holiday spirit, George is visited by a guardian angel who, in a quest to earn his wings, shows George the tremendous impact his lifetime of selflessness has had on the people in his life.
“As a storyteller, I have always loved Christmas movies,” says Magnus Theatre artistic director Thom Currie. “To be able to bring this one to the stage at Magnus is magical.”
It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is directed by Thom Currie, with set design by Ksenia Broda-Milian, lighting design by Rebecca Miller, costume design by Mervi Agombar, and spectacular sound effects designed and built by Hanna Laaksonen and David A. Brown.
The talented cast is a mix of returning performers and some new faces to the Magnus stage. Neil Paterson returns to his hometown for his first Mainstage performance at Magnus Theatre. Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Paterson is well known locally, having performed in Superior Theatre Festival’s production of Salt-Water Moon and as the leading man in Cambrian Players’ The Full Monty. Paterson has been working in film, television, and voice and is known for his roles in the A Christmas Village, The Discarded, and Poor Agnes.

Last seen at Magnus in Miracle on 34th Street, Douglas E. Hughes has enjoyed a career as an actor, playwright and voice artist spanning 40 years. He’s worked in theatres across Canada and the United States and spent 13 seasons at the Shaw Festival and three at Stratford.

Magnus also welcomes back Kevin Hare, whose recent Magnus credits include Miracle on 34th Street, The River, and Of Human Bondage. Hare is also known for film and television work, including roles on Murdoch Mysteries, Saving Hope and The West Wing.

Kate Madden also makes her return, having played opposite Kevin Hare in Of Human Bondage and more recently in Perfect Wedding. Madden has also appeared in Legally Blonde at Theatre Sheridan and in film and television roles, including The Story of Us on CBC.

Making her Magnus Theatre debut is Melissa MacKenzie, a performer, creator and activist whose recent theatre credits include Crazy for You, Kiss Me Kate and Trap Door at Theatre Sheridan; Pregnancy Pact at The Edge Productions; and Anne & Gilbert at The Guild.
It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, previews on Thursday, December 5th at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM and opens on Friday, December 6th at 7:30 PM. The production runs through December 21st, with a Pay What You Can performance on Sunday, December 15th at 2:00 PM.  For more information and to get tickets, please visit, call the Box Office at (807) 345-5552 or visit the Box Office at 10 Algoma Street South.
