International Overdose Awareness Day: A Day to Remember

Sault Ste. Marie and Area Drug Strategy committee

SAULT STE MAIRE, ONTARIO   ~~~~~~~  August 24, 2021  (LSNews)  Every year, on August 31st, communities around the world come together to remember those lost to overdose, acknowledge the grief of loved ones left behind, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and reduce the impact of overdose.

The Sault Ste. Marie and Area Drug Strategy committee invites you to Clergue Park on August 31, 2021, from 11 am to 2 pm (look for the tree with the purple ribbon), to raise awareness of one of the world’s most urgent public health crises – one that, unfortunately, is only getting worse.

Northern Ontario communities, including the Algoma region had the highest rates of opioid-related deaths in 2020. Compared to 2019 data, rates of opioid-related deaths tripled in 2020, from 14.9 to 46.5 per 100,000 people. Nobody is immune to the opioid overdose crisis. The community has lost brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, and friends.

On August 31, please bring a photo of someone you have lost to overdose to add to a memorial display – we will have laminating materials available to protect your photo for you. If you do not have access to print a photo, you can email a photo to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> and the committee will have it printed and available for you. If you do not have a photo, there will be other options available for you to decorate in honor of your loved one.

Naloxone training will be available on site. COVID-19 protocols will be in effect – wearing a mask is recommended. Please do not attend this event if you are experiencing any symptoms<https://www.ontario.ca/page/covid-19-stop-spread> consistent with COVID19.

For more information on this event, please email [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>.
