Fighting Walleye welcome Soo Eagles for Teleco Cup

September 2, 3 and 4th

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~~  September 2, 2022 (LSNews)  The Kam River Fighting Walleye are excited to host the Soo Eagles of the NOJHL in a three game exhibition series at Norwest Arena in Oliver Paipoonge. The teams will be working at capturing  the Teleco Cup over the labour day weekend.

Update on Friday's  game:
Soo Eagles 3, Kam River Fighting Walleye 2.
The Eagles lead the Teleco Cup 1 game to 0.

Game 2 goes down Saturday night, 7:00 PM at NorWest Arena.

Heck of a game tonight, you won’t want to miss tomorrow night’s big rematch!his is the third annual Teleco Cup with the Thunder Bay North Stars capturing the inaugural cup and the Fighting Walleye winning last season. Fighting Walleye President is extremely grateful for the corporate support “ This is the third year that Teleco has come onboard as the presenting sponsor without incredible corporate partners like Teleco junior hockey wouldn’t exist. We are very excited for our fans to have the opportunity to watch the Walleye compete against such a quality organization in the Soo Eagles. Our hockey ops staff has done an incredible job assembling this years team and we are all excited to see them in action”

It is also a homecoming for the Soo Eagles head coach Doug Laprade. Laprade played junior hockey for the Thunder Bay Flyers back during the 1986-1987 season before going on to patrol the right wing for the Lake Superior State University Lakers of the Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association for four years. “Obviously I am very excited to be going home and to be able to coach my team there. “Hockey has taken me places and given me opportunities that I would not have had and it all started for me back home in Thunder Bay.” When asked about this years team Laprade stated “We are very excited about our veteran presence this coming year … 10 returning kids is huge going into this season,“Remember, because of the Covid year, all of these players were technically rookies last year regardless of their age. So, it will be great to watch them in their second real season of junior hockey.”

Walleye General Manager Kevin McCallum had this to say when asked about the weekend series “We are excited to have our friends the Soo Eagles in town for this amazing event . We expect 3 good days of hockey as both clubs round out their respective rosters. Having Teleco as the presenting is amazing with what they provide us. We hope to see the Walleye faithful out and see what is in store for them the remainder of the season”

Kam River head coach Matt Valley expressed this about the Teleco Cup ‘Having exhibition games against other top teams in their respective leagues like the Soo is huge for us. Not only do we get to measure up next to a solid program, but the staff now gets a further look at some of the guys who are battling for the last few roster spots. While our training camp gave us a good indication of what those players are capable of, these games provide a more accurate sample of their abilities. I'm looking forward to a fun filled competitive weekend and to getting back into the swing of things with the rest of our group here in OP
