Thunder Bay, Ontario November 4, 2019 (LSN) It's just one week away from the Thunder Bay premier of "Matilda, the Musical" at the Paramount Theatre. With productions of "Matilda" popping up all over the world, what will make this local theater's production stand out? The directors say the size and the concept which Paramount Live, now it their 11th season, have taken for producing the show. “It is a show with a lot of heart,” said co-director and choreographer Candi Badanai “...and for such a large Broadway show, we felt being true to the source material was our best guide. A line from a song in the show says ’even if you're little, you can do a lot’ which was the basis for many of our creative decisions.
Boundaries can be freeing to create the impossible” For theatre audience members who have not taken in a performance at the Paramount Theatre yet, the space is an intimate 230 seat theatre with really great views of the stage from anywhere in the house. “Intimate moments in this type of show can often get lost in larger theatres” said Candi “but we have worked as a team to creatively bring-in the show and offer some incredibly big surprises in the presentation of this musical. We are really excited for audiences here to experience Matilda”.
The Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of Matilda (played by Gabby Carlin), an intelligent and witty little girl who has psychokinetic powers. Her cruel parents (Kenzie Belisle, Jessica Smith) pay no attention to her, but she forms a special bond with her kind schoolteacher, Miss Honey (Kaylyn Dawydenko). The school's headmistress, Miss Trunchbull (Becca Start), is a mean woman who hates children and enjoys punishing rule breakers. With her cleverness and courage, Matilda just might be the one to change things at the school. With an all-star cast of outstanding young local talent, these Roald Dahl characters are being brought to life with passion, sincerity and comedy that allows the author’s wit and naughtiness to shine.
Matilda the musical will inspire and delight audiences both young and old.
