Colquhoun gifts to TBSO

honour past, build bridges to future

Thunder Bay, Ontario  November 13, 2019  (LSN)   Earlier this year Dr. Jim Colquhoun generously made a transformational gift to be applied to the TBSO’s debt. This one gift has put the Symphony in a position to qualify for additional government funding. In addition, Dr. Colquhoun committed a legacy gift of $100,000, which will be directed to the Symphony’s new endowment fund with the Thunder Bay Community Foundation.

Linda Penner, TBSO President, says of the gifts, “The importance of the lifetime support that Jim and his family have given to the TBSO

Catherine (Cappy) Colquhoun, was a founding member of the Thunder Bay Symphony Chorus, and a Lifetime member of the TBSO’s Board of Directors, and a tireless volunteer in support of the TBSO. To honour her long-standing involvement with the TBSO, Dr. Colquhoun’s legacy gift will go to the Symphony’s brand new endowment fund.

This significant gift is the first for the Symphony’s endowment fund, which is managed by the Thunder Bay Community Foundation.

Legacy gifts, which are used to generate income in perpetuity, can be made in any amount and become part of the Symphony’s endowment fund. These gifts often originate from an individual’s estate, but can also be a gift of insurance, stocks, or cash, and can be made at any time.

To celebrate all the work that Cappy did for the Symphony in her lifetime, the TBSO is thrilled to be dedicating a choral concert annually in her name. This year it is the upcoming choral concert, and holiday favourite, Handel’s Messiah.

Dr. Colquhoun thought it very appropriate when the TBSO asked to celebrate his wife’s lifetime of commitment to the organization by naming a choral concert after her. “Cappy was a fixture at the Symphony and Chorus for decades and ensuring its longevity for our community was important to us. The Messiah concert was very meaningful to her; it was the first work that the TBS Chorus performed with the orchestra back in 1974. Singing Messiah brought her incredible joy. I know she would be proud and humbled to have this concert performed in her memory.”

The Catherine Colquhoun Memorial Concert will be held on December 6 and 7, 2019  7:30 pm at St. Paul’s United Church. Tickets are on sale now and available online, at the TBSO Offices or at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium.

People wishing to learn more about legacy giving to the TBSO are asked to email info@tbso.ca or call 807-626-TBSO (8276).
