THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~  November 19, 2020  (LSN) The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Appeal Kicks-off today with a launch at the Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre Food Bank on Cumberland St.

The goal this year is $220,000 to fund our Community Programs here in Thunder Bay.  The demands for our services continue to be strong through the pandemic.  Kettle funds are vital to maintaining these programs.  Last year, we were thankful to raise $220,000 in the Kettle campaign.

Mayor Bill Mauro brought greetings on behalf of the city encouraging the community to support the campaign financially or by volunteering.

A number of community leaders are out today staffing the kettles in support of the campaign.
They include Councillor

Friday will be our Salvation Army Kettle Day.  Our staff and clients, Advisory Board members, and members of The Salvation Army Thunder Bay Community Church will be out at the kettles.

The Salvation Army provides practical assistance to vulnerable individuals and families at Christmastime and throughout the year. As the coronavirus continues to impact lives, it is expected that the need for support will continue to grow in the coming months.

This Christmas will be especially challenging for many in our community who are impacted by the pandemic.  The Salvation Army is ready to meet their needs.  Throughout the pandemic, The Salvation Army has been providing meals every night on the streets of Thunder Bay through our Mobile Nightly Meal Program (Soup Van) and hampers through our Food Bank. Kettle funds  ensure that these will continue.  This Christmas we will support families and individuals who are facing financial challenges.  Now that schools are open, we are ensuring students receive nourishment through our school breakfast program.

More information about our local services can be found at

“The need is great in Thunder Bay, but the people in Thunder Bay are also great!  We have confidence that those who can will support us in our work to lift up those who are in need and we are grateful for the relationships we have in the city” said Gary Ferguson, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre.

Kettles are located at:

  • Intercity Shopping Centre,
  • Real Canadian Superstore,
  • Grandview Mall,
  • Walmart – Memorial Ave., Walmart – County Fair Mall, Walmart – Arthur St. Marketplace

We are thankful for these corporate partners who host the kettles as well as our other corporate partners who make the campaign possible:  Halfway Motors Nissan, Mastrangelo Fuels, and Tbaytel.

The kettles are fully staffed by volunteers from service clubs and associations, businesses, and individuals who take time out of their busy schedules to help those in need.  Last year, over 875 volunteers put in 2,468 hours at the Kettles.  In consultation with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, we have developed protocols to keep volunteers, staff, and the public safe.  These include providing PPE supplies, screening, wearing face masks, and maintaining physical distancing.  We will continue to monitor the situation in the city.  This year, our need for volunteers is high due the impact of the pandemic.  Anyone interested should call 345-6492 to help.
