Audiences to Meet the Playwright Drew Hayden Taylor

Magnus Theatre Cottagers and Indians

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO,  March 5, 2020  (LSN) Playwright Drew Hayden Taylor will be returning to Magnus Theatre for a face to face conversation with theatregoers on Sunday, March 15th, following the matinee performance of his latest play, Cottagers and Indians.

One of Canada’s most prolific playwrights, Taylor has been a local favourite for many years. Some of his previous productions at Magnus Theatre include 400 Kilometres, Dead White Writer on the Floor, The Berlin Blues, Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth, and Crees in the Caribbean.

In a story based on actual events from the recent past, Taylor’s latest work is a humorous dramatization of an increasingly bitter conflict in cottage country. Neighbours are outraged when an Indigenous man begins repopulating his local lakes with wild rice, feeling it’s an eyesore that interferes with the enjoyment of their property.
Taylor drew inspiration from a real conflict in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario when a local man named James Whetung from Curve Lake First Nation began planting and harvesting wild rice to revive a traditional source of nourishment for his community. Taylor, who is also from Curve Lake, drew on this story to shed light on wider Canadian discussions about heritage, ownership and place.

An award-winning playwright, author, columnist, filmmaker, and lecturer, Taylor has spent the last two decades travelling the world and writing about it from an Indigenous perspective, managing to bridge the gap between cultures by tickling the funny bone.
Meet the Playwright is offered free of charge to the general public and takes place in the Magnus Theatre auditorium, 10 South Algoma Street, at 3:30 pm on Sunday, March 15th. Tickets for the show are available through the Magnus Theatre box office at 807-345-5552 or online at www.magnustheatre.com.

Cottagers and Indians previews at Magnus Theatre on Thursday, March 12th at 2:00pm and 7:30pm and opens on Friday, March 13th at 7:30. The show runs until March 28th with a pay what you can performance on March 22nd.
