Thunder Bay, Ontario November 6, 2019 (LSN) Artisans Northwest was established in 1975, by artists in the NWO area, that wanted to create a market where they could sell their work. They also wanted to build a network of friends, who gave each other support and encouragement through mentoring. Our original members also wanted to be able to give back to the NWO arts community in any way that they could, sometimes giving a scholarship in the arts, supporting a local community group that uses arts in their programming, basically donating their work or monetarily to groups in the community that have art involved somehow in their mandate.
Membership vacillates from year to year, the medium our members work in wax and wane and change with our artist's growth and innovations. Currently we have over 80 members, 60 of which are in our show this November. Our members have the option of being involved in the November show each year depending upon their schedules, life situation and availability. Many of our members live and work as full time artists, they teach, travel to shows and teaching workshops, they have home studios, but all are tied together by being members in Thunder Bay's longest running art collective.
In order to be offered membership in Artisans Northwest you go through a jury process. The Jury is comprised of Artisan Northwest members, who evaluate the artist's work for technique, originality, and excellence. The Jury also assesses how the artist's items are displayed, as artists must not only create, but if they expect to sell their work, it must be displayed in a practical but creative way that engages our patrons.
Our group feels that the jury process is essential to treating everyone equally who applies to be a member. No one person gets a free pass, everyone is evaluated the same way. The jury process also holds us all to a strict standard of excellence, and nudges us, encouraging us to go further with our designs.
If you are curious about what our members have been up to, and what they will have with them at the show this November, feel free to follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest, along with our website artisansnorthwest.ca. See you at the show!
Artisans Northwest 44th Annual Art and Fine Craft show takes place on November 16 and 17 starting at 10 am this year at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay.
