Veteran Politician to Seek Council Re-election

THUNDER BAY, ON - January 7, 2010 - Veteran politician Iain Angus announced today that Iain Angushe would be seeking re-election as

Councillor-at-Large for the City of Thunder Bay.

“Serving the community of Thunder Bay is something I have done all my life- in many

different ways” said Angus. “I continue to have the energy and enthusiasm to work on

behalf all of the people of this community and I seek the opportunity to continue in my

role as an elected member of Thunder Bay City Council.”

Angus stated that his priorities for the next four years include:

• Continued emphasis on job creation, both in the traditional sectors and in the

new health research field

• Further progress on the 52K waterfront development, with significant expansion

to other areas of the city

• Continued redevelopment of the downtown cores and the older areas of the City

• Enhancement of the parks and trail systems, including reinvestment in existing

parks

• Further progress on rebuilding aging sewer, water and road systems

• Working with the Province to rejuvenate the ailing forest industry, both with

traditional products and new value added products

• Continuing to press the Ontario Government to increase Ontario Works rates to

the poverty level

• Progress on the development of a multi-purpose sport and entertainment

complex

• Development and implementation of a plan to provide supportive housing to a

wide range of residents, including aging seniors

• Continue to work with local school boards in identifying opportunities for joint

planning and development

 

Angus, who was first elected to Thunder Bay City Council in 2003, and was re-elected

for a four year term in 2006, has been a steadying influence on Council for the past 7

years. Angus has been a vocal supporter of Shelter House and the Regional Food

Distribution Association as well as working to ensure that the less fortunate of the

community have a voice on Council and the TBDSSAB1. He has also been a strong

supporter of efforts to create new jobs through strategic investments and levering City

funds with federal and provincial grants.

He chairs the Community Services Committee of Council, is the Chair of the Thunder

Bay District Social Services Board, a Vice President of the Northwestern Ontario

Municipal Association and a member of the Board of the Lakehead Region

Conservation Authority. He is also a member of City Council’s Communications

Committee, the newly formed Thunder Bay Community Safety Council and the Thunder

Bay Community Resource Council2. Angus is also co-chair of the Common Voice

Northwest Energy Task Force and is the volunteer Executive Director of Common Voice

Northwest, a regional research and lobby group. He has also been a member or chair of

a number of Council ad hoc committees over the past 7 years.

Angus represented the riding of Thunder Bay-Atikokan in Canada’s Parliament from

1983 to 1994. He also represented the riding of Fort William in the Ontario Legislature

from 1975 to 1977. Angus was a City employee from 1969 to 1975 and from 1977 to

1984 in the Parks and Recreation Department. “His 30 plus years in public

administration, at a staff and elected level, is an asset to Thunder Bay City Council that

should be retained” say a number of supporters. He is a public policy consultant who

conducts research and prepares feasibility studies for municipalities and First Nation

communities.
