#LSN_News  University of Wisconsin-Superior

SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN   –  March 7, 2019  (LSN) — One of the greatest challenges faced by beekeepers, particularly in polar climates, is the seasonal loss of beehives. On average, beekeepers in the United States lose about 30 percent of their hives during the winter months, with areas in the Upper Midwest losing as much as 50 percent. These losses translate into significant ecological and financial costs.

Doc Bee (as he is known by his students) came up with an idea to build a Beehive Wind Shield™, a device he believed would help solve the problem, and mentioned it one day to his friend and colleague, Kenn Raihala, a retired mechanical engineer at UWS.

Understanding How We Got Here – County Budget and Property Tax Levy

Jeff Cadwell, Cook County Administrator Lake Superior News
#LSN_News #LSN_CookCounty

COOK COUNTY, MINNESOTA - February 11, 2019  (LSN)   Each year, the Cook County Board of Commissioners sets the direction and tone for county government through the   budgeting process. Each yearly budget allocates resources to provide required services; public safety, transportation, public health and human services and other general government functions like land services and record services. The budgetsetting process involves allocating limited resources among competing service priorities. There are never enough resources to do everything everyone thinks the county should do. And many of the County’s programs and services are mandated by state or federal authorities.

COUNTY CONNECTIONS: Respectful Discourse Is the Answer

Molly_Hicken_County_Connections Lake Superior News
#LSN_News #LSN_CookCounty

COOK COUNTY, MINNESOTA - January 29, 2019  (LSN) I’ve now practiced law for Cook County for over 10 years. In that time, I’ve learned a lot about how to effectively negotiate resolutions despite clear conflict and high emotion. I’ve learned these lessons through trial and error. Being too aggressive out of the gate may win the battle but lose the war. Avoiding difficult issues may be more comfortable but will only allow a problem to fester and potentially worsen. My conclusion? If you think something or someone is wrong, you make the change you desire by addressing the conflict with respectful discourse. For the benefit of taxpayers, and for the benefit of my colleagues in local government, I’d like to talk about what this means to me.
