THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO – June 26, 2018  (LSN)  On Tuesday, June 19, 2018 the Thunder Bay Community Foundation (TBCF) hosted a Scholarship & Bursary Reception. A record high amount of $118,800 was awarded to 31 youth from Thunder Bay and the District of Thunder Bay including Geraldton, Marathon, Nipigon-Red Rock and Manitouwadge. The reception was filled with love, pride and joy for the many wonderful recipients from their loved ones; donors and friends of the Foundation; and the Board, Alumni and staff of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation. “We are overwhelmed with gratitude that our donors have been so generous and have allowed us to give out 17 awards to 31 youth”, said Bonnie Moore, Executive Director.

The Foundation received a record breaking 138 applications, which is double the amount from 2017 and more than any year in Foundation history. "This year was my first year chairing the Scholarship and Bursary Marking committee. It was such a rewarding experience, albeit, a challenging experience. Most people would state they were amazed with all the strong applicants and the efforts they put into their high school career – however I wasn’t.  Thunder Bay as a community shouldn’t amaze us anymore.  With our athletes, to our entrepreneurs, to our doctors, nurses, lawyers, trades people and yes Leaders – Thunder Bay as a community is like no other – and a place with such strong leadership.” Said Mike Larizza, Chair of the Scholarship and Bursary Committee.

Applications are available March 1st of every year. Go to www.tbcf.org for more information.

The Thunder Bay Community Foundation, established in 1971, actively promotes community philanthropy for the long-term benefit of Thunder Bay and the surrounding area. Our goal is to create a more vibrant, healthy and engaged community by building positive, lasting relationships between donors and the worthy causes they support. The TBCF specializes in building endowment funds to support the ever-changing needs of Thunder Bay. Gifts to the Foundation are pooled and invested, and the income earned is distributed as grants that support community projects. Over the past 48 years we have distributed over $4 million in grants and scholarships. Today, approximately $11.3 million in assets hold in trust approximately $11.3 million in assets.
