THUNDER BAY, ON   ----   July  10, 2011   ---    A late afternoon forest fire south of Margaret Lake, Helitackapproximatly 50km's south west of Cat Lake in the Red Lake district has burned a section of the main Hydro line to Pickle lake. Communities of Pickle Lake, Cat Lake, Slate Falls and Musselwhite Mines are without power at time of this report. Red Lake-84

Red Lake 55 - Not under control - 201.0 hectares - Northwest of the community of North Spirit Lake
Red Lake 57 - Not under control - 120.8 hectares - Southwest of the community of Sandy Lake 
Red Lake 84 - Not under control-30 hectares-Southwest of Cat Lake

Deer Lake Complex

Fire operations continue at the Deer Lake Complex with four fires of concern; Red Lake 26, 27, 55 and Making sure57 all of which are lightning caused from Tuesday's passing lightning and thunderstorm.  An Incident Management team is now established in Deer Lake and Sandy Lake with committed resources to action the multiple fires. The Far North fires are responding well to fire suppression efforts from Northeast and Northwestern Ontario FireRangers and air attack. Fire crews continue to either tie in the perimeters or widen their control lines. The forest fires are not a threat to Far North communities but smoke continues to drift in and out of all communities causing concern. Far north communities Sandy Lake, Cat Lake, North Spirit Lake, Kee-way-win and Koocheching First Nations have reported smoke issues and continue to monitor the situation; they remain on evacuation alert. 543 Deer Lake evacuees remain in community of Greenstone.

 

Sioux Lookout District

Sioux Lookout 35 is not under control at 78,999.0 hectares and is approximately 9 km east of Mishkeegogamang at its closest point.The fire is located southeast of Pickle Lake and continues to receive tactical fire suppression efforts along the north flank with crews concentrating on hotspots identified by infrared scans. The fire received precipitation and favourable weather conditons today resulting in less intense fire behaviour on the fire line. Emergency Area Order restrictions are in effect along the Albany River in proximity of the fire.

Sioux Lookout 35- Lightning caused - Not under control -78,999 hectares -Southeast of Pickle Lake.                           
Sioux Lookout 61- Lightning-caused -Being observed-1,100 hectares - southwest of the community of Cat Lake.          
Sioux Lookout 64-Lightning caused - Being observed - 2,500 hectares - southwest of the community of Cat Lake. 

Forest Fire Hazard
Warm and dry weather returns as sunshine continues into the beginning with the exception of locations north of Big Trout Lake which will see cloud cover. The forest fire hazard remains extreme in the Far North and is moderate for remainder of the Northwest Region.
