Saul Laskin dies at 90

THUNDER BAY, ON., -- October 5, 2008 -- The first Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay when Saul Laskin 1st Mayor of the City of Thunder BayPort Arthur and Fort William amalgamated in 1970   died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto after collapsing at his home. He was 90. Served on the Board of Governors for 15 years and received both an Honorary Doctorate and the title of Fellow of Lakehead University.

Saul Laskin became mayor when the former cities of Fort William and Port Arthur amalgamated in 1970. He served as head of council until 1972. Laskin was previously the mayor of Port Arthur from 1962-69.  read more.....>

Resolution doesn’t meet the expectations of 77% of Thunder Bay citizens

 THUNDER BAY, ON -  October 3, 2008 - Citizens Concerned about PesticidesCCAP was under the impression that the by-law would be brought to city council for discussion October 6th . Instead resolution # 2 states that the city will proceed with an educational campaign on alternatives to the use of pesticides.  We applaud this resolution but it doesn’t meet our expectations or the expectations of 77% of Thunder Bay citizens. Citizens Concerned About Pesticides (CCAP) has appeared before city council several times. City councillors have been generally supportive of a by-law restricting the use of pesticides in Thunder Bay.  Council requested that CCAP do three things and we have accomplished them all, with minimal expense but hundreds of hours of volunteer time.  read more.....>

New Colonoscopy Program Reduces Travel for North Shore Residents

THUNDER BAY, ON - September 18, 2008 - Marathon, Ontario. Today, Wilson Memorial Dr Ken GehmanGeneral Hospital (WMGH) began to provide an important new service to residents of the North Shore. A $115,000 grant from the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation enabled the purchase of the medical equipment necessary to offer colonoscopy screening at the Hospital. THUNDER BAY, ON. - October 2, 2008 -  Changes to the festival syllabus were announced Dawn Sebestaby the Lakehead Festival of Music and the Arts coordinator, Dawn Sebesta.

The changes will bring the local festival in line with the other music festivals in the province.

Dawn Sebesta said “This past week I attended the Ontario Music Festival Association Annual General Meeting.  There is going to be a change in the Musical Theatre category at Provincials.  Disney music, movies and operettas will no longer be accepted in the Musical Theatre category.  Further clarification is that music from stage productions like Lion King, Sound of Music, etc. can be used, but music from Disney movies such as Little Mermaid, Pocohontas, etc. cannot be sung in the Musical Theatre category.  Our Festival will be enforcing this as well. “ Lake Superior News

Outbreak of Salmonella Poona - Sunday, September 28, 2008

THUNDER BAY, ON - September 28, 2008 - In Canada to date, there have been 6 cases of gastro-intestinal outbreak of Salmonella Poonaspread across Manitoba, Quebec and Nova Scotia with the same genetic fingerprint, and 14 other suspected cases in Ontario.  No one has been hospitalized so far.  There have been 48 cases reported in the U.S Lake Superior News

MEN FINED $2,250 FOR LEAVING GARBAGE ON CROWN LAND - Wednesday, September 24, 2008
