Lakehead mourns loss of Heather Saaltink

 

THUNDER BAY, Ont.  --  December 28, 2008 - Lakehead Athletics is very sad to mark the Heather Saaltinkpassing of one of its family with the loss of Heather Saaltink. Heather was killed in a tragic car accident on December 17th while driving with family members on a Christmas shopping trip from Ottawa to her hometown of Cornwall, Ontario.

Heather had been a member of the Lakehead Thunderwolves track and cross country teams until this season when she chose not to rejoin the squad to concentrate on her final year of study in Honours Philosophy at Lakehead.   read more ....>

THUNDER BAY, ON  -- December 23, 2008  --  Jim Peterson of Ambassadors North-West Jim Petersoncame up with the idea of a festive job fare over the Christmas holidays to help businesses in need of talent. Specifically he wanted to target former city residents who out migrated for education and for work. Assisted by The Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, the event held at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium was a real success. There were some great business minds behind this project, and everything that could be done to make an impression on returning residents was done. Lousy Highway Maintenance 11 17 East of Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY, ON  ---  December 18, 2008 -- Lunch at my favourite trough was full of Transport Ditch McKenzie Hillpeople commenting on how rotten our highway maintenance has been lately. In fact it was the cause of a certain amount of profanity.

I had noticed two vehicles in the ditch on the way to lunch. On the way home I noticed that this transport had joined the population in the ditch. The section of road from Mackenzie to Nelson road is one of the poorest sections of the Trans-Canada highway. Underneath the inch deep snow-pack on this stretch of road features crumbling asphalt pot holes and dozens of driveways and access roads all making the road a danger to the public.  read more....>

 

New study shows number of people with Alzheimer’s to soar

THUNDER BAY, ON, January 6, 2009 –. In Thunder Bay, 3,500 people have Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. The number of people with Alzheimer’s disease is expected to rise dramatically in the next 25 years. Today, Alzheimer’s disease is a stark reality for more than 160,000 Ontarians, a number that is expected to increase to over 180,000 this year. Now, a new study commissioned by the Alzheimer Society of Canada and RiskAnalytica confirms that Alzheimer’s disease does not only strike the elderly. People as young as 40 and 50 are also developing the disease. Rising Tide: The Impact of Dementia on Canadian Society reveals that 15 per cent or one in six of those with dementia are under the age of 65.  In 15 years, the number of Ontarians with Alzheimer’s disease will soar to 386,984. Ballet BC Cancels Thunder Bay Show

THUNDER BAY, ON --  December 24,  2008 -- Ballet BCcancelled April tour was to include A Streetcar Named DesireThunder Bay.  Ballet BC company has announced it will cancel a five-city spring tour.

The troupe was to dance A Streetcar Named Desire, a contemporary ballet by its artistic director John Alleyne, in a three-week national tour next April. The tour would have taken the ballet company to Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon and Thunder Bay, but it was too costly to contemplate for a company in financial difficulty.  412 pairs of warm winter socks

THUNDER BAY On -- December 24, 2008 --  The final count for Take A Hike's 2008 Socks for Shelter House campaign is in.  As a result of this year's effort, the local outdoor store will be donating 412 pairs of warm winter socks to those in need in Thunder Bay.  The socks which retail for $15.95 a pair will be distributed through community groups such as Shelter House, Dew Drop Inn, Salvation Army, Faye Peterson Transition House and others.
 
This is the seventh consecutive year Take A Hike staff have coordinated the Socks for Shelter House campaign.  It is also one of its major sponsors.  For every four pairs of Thorlo brand socks sold in the store between November 1 and December 23, Take A Hike donated one pair of socks to the campaign.

Salmonella Dry Dog and Cat Food 

THUNDER BAY, ON --  December 24,  2008 ---  A rare strain of salmonella in dry pet food sickened at least eight people this year, in addition to the 71 people who have fallen ill since 2006, according to the CDC
