THUNDER BAY, ON - May 9, 2011 - Today marks the first day of Naturopathic Medicine Week, which occurs during the second week of May each year. During this week naturopathic doctors across Canada hold free events to talk about their unique, more natural approach to health. The goal is to teach members of their community about natural medicine, health promotion and disease prevention.
Naturopathic medicine is a system of medicine that works to treat imbalances. Most health problems are caused by imbalances in the body and natural medicine focuses on fixing these imbalances so the body can heal itself. Naturopathic doctors don’t actually do the healing – we help bring things into balance so that your body’s natural healing mechanisms can take over.
Conventional medicine often focuses on treating symptoms instead of helping the body heal itself. 99% of pharmaceuticals are intended to treat symptoms and not cure. Conventional and Naturopathic medical theories are not necessarily opposed, however, – they are complimentary. Each has its place. Conventional medicine usually is more effective in treating acute problems, such as trauma and infectious diseases. Naturopathic medicine is usually more effective in treating chronic problems.
