Minnesota Christmas Tree Arrives at White House

 The 2014 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree travelled 2,864.7 Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota provided the 2014 U.S. Capitol Christmas tree. The tree is ee 60 – 70 feet tall and mis a White Spruce (Picea glauca), which is the same species as was first provided by the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in 1992. In addition, companion trees will be provided by the Minnesota Tree Growers Association to be placed inside offices in Washington D.C., such as the Chief of the Forest Service Office and the USDA.

The tree lighting traditionally occurs after Thanksgiving as determined by the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Minn Xmas TreeWith great fanfare, the tree – a whopping 80-foot plus white spruce– left November 2nd from the Chippewa National Forest followed by a caravan of caretakers for the journey to the U.S. Capitol. More than 30 community celebrations are being planned throughout the tree’s 2,000 mile journey to Washington D.C. From a grand kickoff in Bemidji and surrounding communities, to a 65 foot banner of the tree hung by a crane at the site of Bentleyville in Duluth, to more than 500 school children helping get ready for the holidays in Milwaukee, to a Sunday Cleveland Browns Football game, not to mention participation from hundreds of school children across the country – this tree is bringing communities together and along with it will bring the message of love and joy to the U.S. Capitol this holiday season.
